Three cheers for my brother! He plays “real” golf (not that miniature golf stuff I do), and he applied to play in an amateur event at THE golf course in town, Valhalla. (No kidding, this course hosted the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championship! This is a primo supremo course!) He found out this week that he gets to play there! How cool!!! Speaking of my brother, it’s a sad anniversary. Twenty years ago today my beloved baby (the one in my profile picture here) went to Rainbow Bridge. She was 14 and had started into kidney failure. The vet offered to run more tests, but I said, “No, enough.” She replied, “To tell you the truth, if she were my pet, I’d say ‘enough,’ too.” So I made the appointment. We had a party for her (she loved KFC chicken strips [which are horrible for human consumption so you know what they’ll do to dogs!], so she had some, and all the water she wanted [she had been down to a quarter cup of water a day and her kidneys were still not saturating her urine, which is how we “knew”]). When the time came (I made the appointment as late in the day as possible), my brother took her to the vet for me and stayed with her until the end. She’s buried in his “pet cemetery” along with his departed babies. When my brother asked me how much he owed me for going to the grocery for him while he had covid I told him, “remember, you paid me 20 years ago this month.” Today was my dental cleaning. Man, did she hurt my teeth. But everything else hurts, so why not them, too? After that I went to lunch to get my teeth dirty. (Don’t worry, I waited a half an hour after the fluoride treatment.) Then I went down the road to Trader Joe’s to get some “Soffritto” seasoning that Coral (@TheSojourner ) recommended. I ate very light tonight (peaches, pineapple, and yogurt, not the things you’d put it on) so I haven’t tried it yet. However, I did open the jar, and MAN DOES THAT STUFF SMELL GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! I figure even if I don’t like it or can’t eat it I can use it for fragrances in the house! Last week my next-door-neighbors’ house was broken into. I feel so bad for them. Not because they lost personal stuff (they say they didn’t, and all the thieves took was money), but because of what my old babysitter described as “feeling violated” after her house was broken into way back in the 1980s. The weird thing is their son works for ADT Security Systems…and they didn’t have an alarm! Needless to say, they do now. I saw their son over there Sunday morning installing one of the cameras, and in the evening they were over at my house, showing me what the cameras (four of them) were picking up. That included us in my back yard. After that happened I went to Lowe’s and got some PVC tubing. I have pipe in every window now, to where they won’t open more than the inch it takes to set the alarms off. Of course, all those things do, as my dear mother of blessed memory used to say, is keep an honest man honest. I’ve noticed a little twinge in the tree color, which means it’s getting close to “that time of year” to go leaf looking!!! It’s funny that one website says our leaves will be duller this year because we had too much rain, while another website says they’ll be more vibrant than usual because we had too much rain. Y’all have a great evening!

Congratulations on your brother getting a chance to play golf at an amateur event. I am sorry to learn about the loss of your pet 20 years ago.

Thank you. Anyone who’s had a pet has had that heartbreak.

I know he’s going to enjoy it, no matter how poorly he plays. Those pets, they sure leave fur all over your heart, don’t they.

We’re supposed to have a dramatic (25 degree) drop in temperatures Thursday, which might make it perfect weather for leaving for a few days.

So this is an "Italian style" soffritto, interesting, I am learning interesting things about my country that I never knew. The plain Italian soffritto: heat olive oil in a pan, added finely chopped onions, celery and carrots. Cook stirring at medium high for 15 minutes. This is the base, the rest you add according to what you need to do with the basic soffritto.

Oh, you know how we Americans are. I wonder what people from Mexico think of our “Mexican restaurants.” I already know what Italian-Americans think of “Italian restaurants.”

@LadyDuck — I know. The first time I had chicken molé it was so good I thought I was going to orbit the moon. You don’t find THAT at Taco Bell!

@FourWalls I think that Mexican restaurants in America are as fake as Mexican restaurants in the rest of the world. Mexican food is so much better than dry tacos with a bit of filling.

At the other house, we had ADT install an alarm system after we were broken into... The thieves took money and messed up stuff... and we didn't feel safe in our own home anymore. When we moved into this house, I really couldn't afford to have ADT install an alarm system (And we aren't allowed to by the "rules" we signed when we rented this house, anyway.) so I went through and put blocks on the windows so they couldn't be opened without some work from the inside... I've removed the blocks from two windows during the summer so we could open them to let in fresh air and then put the blocks back in place when it started getting "chilly" at night (Chilly to Pretty, not me.). Leaves haven't started changing color where I live. I was looking for that today when we drove the 45 miles to Springfield for my doctor appointment... Everything is still vibrantly green in our area. (Normally, "tourist season" starts around the middle of October here for fall colors. We shall see what happens in a couple more weeks.) Enjoy your night!

I have an alarm system, and it’s all you can do other than sit at home with a bazooka aimed at the windows or door. And I refuse to be a prisoner.

@DaddyEvil — motion lights are great for that. I have one mounted near my back door, and that sucker LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT when it comes on. It has the added benefit of “surprise,” because it’s not always on. I wish they made one where the light came on and the muffled sound of a dog barking could be played.

@FourWalls True... plus, when we moved in the older couple next door asked me to keep the outside lights on 24/7, so there was little chance of anyone sneaking in through the yard. All the houses on our street do that, too.

That is great your brother gets to golf at Valhalla. I'm sorry about your neighbors getting broken into. And for the anniversary of losing your fur baby. I understand your feelings as we sure do miss our Buttons. Thankful we still have Ginger with us. I am ready for the colors and cooler weather. We're supposed to be in the mid-40s Friday night. I am happy.
