But, What will the squirrels eat?

The forestry division has been asking people for acorns as they plan to do plenty of planting around the state this year. It is funny because a couple of years here there have been a bumper crop of acorns and the squirrels and even the deer got into them. You couldn't walk outside to the car without stepping on them, and crunching them under your feet. Most years though it isn't like that, and some years there seem to be a scarcity of acorns. This year, there isn't a lot and there isn't a little. As I have mentioned several times we have a healthy squirrel population here, and I would hate to take away their main food source. If it was a bumper year, I might could spare a few..but not this year. The squirrels need the nutrition.

Oh I understand the need for them. They help fight greenhouse gas for one thing, but the animals that depend on acorns for food need them too.

You walk on deer and squirrels? Doesn't crunching them under your feet hurt them? You're soooo mean!

Can they be sold or eaten by humans? I don't have any idea about squirrels. There's none here in the city where I live.

@cacay1 I do know that some people usually hillbilly types eat or have eaten squirrel, and maybe possum too. Squirel stew is supposed to be tasty, but I don't plan on eating it...

What else are acorns used for other than planting and feeding squirrels?

I am sure they would find something if push came to shove. They are resourceful animals after all.

Maybe, but some years they seem to really be scrounging aound. and I don't want them digging up bulbs and so forth to find something to eat. They will do that.

Acorns are their main food here. They also eat some other kin of nut, which I am not sure where they are finding them. They look like hickory or walnut, but don't know where those trees are.
