Unreasonable charge

Unreasonable charge

On Sep.20th I sent a small package with my mom's knitted toy to a very good friend in Denmark. Today he told me that the local post office asked him to pay for it so that they will hand it over. I really don't understand it because I sent it by air and I have paid for everything. I have sent packages or mails overseas and I haven't heard that the local post office will charge anything from the receivers. Especially this is just a personal gift and it is not a commercial item. It is a DIY thing only. I emailed to Danish post office with attached knitted toy images but got an auto reply and they don't reply by email any more. My friend called them and then filed an application with my email and hopefully this will be solved.

I didn’t know you could put anything in the mail without proper postage. So I don’t see how they can charge the receiver.

I paid for the package when I sent it. This is quite weird that Danish post office still needs to charge it. Perhaps charging the tax? That will be strange since it is only a personal gift.

@youless Doesn’t seem like more charges would be owed.

Hope you friend gets his money back. Ideally the post office should not be charging him anything.

He hasn't paid for it yet. The post office will give him the package if he pays for it. I told him not to pay for it since it is not reaonable. If this is not solved yet, I will keep on solving it.

That's very disappointing. It's hard to speak to a person nowadays, isn't it? Businesses want you to do everything online.

I am really surprised that an email doesn't work for them today.

They are trying to get a customs fee. They can't collect on a handmade item that wasn't purchased and doesn't have a receipt. In some areas it could be considered "greed". Of course, in some country's eyes, since the postmark is from China, it HAS to be something commercial, so they will charge duty on the item. It isn't fair, and shouldn't be done to anyone. I hope your friend is able to get the toy without having to pay extra money for it. If he can't get it, then suggest that he goes to the Postmaster. Forgive my next comment, but it seems to fit, my mom used to use the comment often. "There is something rotten in the state of Denmark."

You are right. That's quite strange they regard it as a commericial product since it is really a DIY item. I told my friend that the post office can open the package to see whether there is a tag on the knitted toy. Of course they can also search the internet as I know it is unique all over the world as my mom made it. Even the post office in my country won't be so unreasonable, Denmark should do it better.
