Potatoes? - Yes or No

I love potatoes. It's one of the carbs that I could never give up! Potatoes were domesticated in Southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia 7,000-10,000 years ago. They were introduced to Europe from the Americas by the Spanish in the late 1500's. Potatoes are now a staple in many parts of the world; and there are now over 5,000 types. Potatoes are part of the nightshade family; and it is said that if the green portion of a potato (the skin and sprouts) is exposed to light, that it could be harmful to humans. I like all kinds of potatoes including sweet potatoes. I'll eat them in any way, shape or form as long as they don't contain onions in the mix. What about you? Do you like potatoes? What kind/s do you like? Photo Credit: Pixabay

Growing up I remember having potatoes with almost every dinner. The only times I recall mom not making taters is when she'd make spaghetti or pinto beans.

Potatoes are quite popular and everyone's favourite. In fact in India, proverbs and sayings are made about potatoes. It's used like an adjective for a person who is easy going, gels well with people and surroundings, and is loved by all

I love potatoes!!!! I’m so glad they’re low on points on the Weight Watchers diet, too!

@LindaOHio — Weight Watchers goes by a formula of calories, fiber (good), and fat (bad) to calculate the points. All by their lonesome selves, potatoes don’t have fat or many calories. It’s all those goodies we add to them that make them so bad.

How would we know if the sprout and skin were expose to light when buying potatoes? This is worrying.

The skin will turn green but only on the exposed part. The sun causes a chemical reaction and the green skin is slightly toxic. Just peel off the green and there's no worries.

You look for the green color. If they aren't green, they are OK. And you can peel off the green part.

I do like potatoes. Mashed, baked, sweet or French fries like them all. Another type that is not as popular as the others, but I also enjoy are red new potatoes. Another potato fact they are still alive when you buy them!

@LindaOHio I did not know either! Fortunately, they are dormant, but did you ever notice if they become warm and moist, they sprout buds, yikes! That's why they tell you to keep them cool and dry. Now that's a real "tater toot" isn't it
