I have a computer. It is seven years old. It became slow. I am thinking to change it. Is it too early? I waited a lot, but I lost my patience. I can barely work on it. My smartphone is much faster. Now computers are so expensive. If I will wait maybe they will become more expensive. How long do you keep a desktop before changing it?

DO NOT folllow @bsetiadi advice to upgrade your comuter. An old motherboard cannot work with a new processor, you surely only have a 2.0 USB port that is very slow. Do not waste money upgrading a 7 years old computer, you end up spending more than buying a new one when there is a sale.

well.. it can be true but also can be wrong. Depend on your knowledge of computer and what you do with your computer.
i have upgraded my friend laptop which is dual core only. i added 4GB RAM and replace the harddisk with SSD Sata (which is compatible with old SATA disk)... and now it starts the Windows 5x faster than before.
If you only work with Excel, Words and internet, upgrade is worth it.
But if you are a programmer, designer, musicians, etc which requires recent softwares, then replace the 7years old PC is the best choice, as @LadyDuck said... because of old fashion technology... at least for low price you can pick core i5

@bsetiadi There is no possible "depends" because she said that her desktop is 7 years old.
I calculated how much it would have costed to upgrade mine and I bought a new one.
My husband was a programmer and we have always built our own computers. I know of what we are talking about. I have an old computer that I keep for "tests", it is even too slow for online researches, the pages are very demanding now.

I have a laptop and have been using it for more than five years. Will continue using it till it starts troubling me. If repairs are needed anytime will check the cost of repairs in comparison to buying a new laptop and then decide according to my budget.

Well I only have little chromebooks. I do no longer use desktops.
But the Chromebooks stop doing security updates every 6 years or so, so then it is advisable to get a new one. It is a racket they have going to make more money always.

I had to get a new computer after I moved into my uncle's house. It actually stopped working. I think that is when to get a new one. lol I can't remember how old that one was.

If you have a budget constraints, then I suggest to upgrade it. When I was unemployed, what I can think of is only "how to improve the performance without spending too much money". So I started checking in the internet, that RAM (memory), Processor and Harddisk are the vital things of the performance. Slowly just change or add the memory, and then replace the harddisk with SSD SATA (cheaper than NVme) ... it will improve the performance in low cost

Until it is working and I'm able to fix the small errors, I still keep it.

Until the desktop doesn't work, then I buy a new one. But now, I'm using a laptop.
