A novel grilling plate

I spotted this contraption at the camping park where we spent Saturday night. It’s meant to sit over the fire and act as a grill. The circular grid is held up by a chain and the chain can be raised or lowered to place the grill at the height you want. Vince, my husband, does most of our cooking and thinks that barbecues are the ruination of good meat. Certainly I’ve had a few barbecued meals where the meat has been cremated rather than well done. I know many myLotters really enjoy their barbecues but to each his own, I guess.

I love food cooked outside over an open fire. Next choice is a barbecue grill. The meat being cremated is the cooks fault no matter where it is cooked.

I'm sure you're right. Certainly it's nice being outside for a meal.

I hate food that is cooked on a grill but my first husband loved it and so does my husband now.

@JudyEv agreed. I think it gives food a gross flavor.

Many rave about grilling/barbecuing but it doesn't suit everyone.

We used to have a tripod for cooking over an open fire back from our camping days years ago. I had the cast pots to put the food into so that it would retain the heat as well.

Cast-iron pots are great for cooking but aren't they heavy?

@JudyEv I see, ok. Living in an apartment, no grilling allowed. I go to Burger King when I've craving for grilled burgers.

This grilling plate is great. It's handy that you can adjust the height. I like BBQ once in a while.

We don't have it often. I like it if it isn't burnt to a cinder.

I am impressed by this novel grill plate. You have to be careful to get food done on the inside yet not make the outside into charcoal.

That is always the hard part. The middle is nearly raw but the outside all blackened.

@JudyEv - I suspect the same here for the store that sell surplus army equipment, but they have interesting things and not very expensive.

That's interesting. We have what are called 'surplus stores' here and they sell surplus army stuff although I suspect some is just manufactured for such stores.

In the southern US, what you described is “grilling.” Barbecuing in the south is rubbing a large slab of meat with seasonings and putting it in a slow cooker over hickory or mesquite or cherry or other kinds of wood to enhance the flavor, then letting it smoke for 10-24 hours. Night and day difference. If you ever visit Texas and get offered barbecue it won’t be “cremated.”

Sometimes the meat is nice if it's not cooked too quickly.
