Welcome to Monday. The “controversial” American holiday is upon us, so I’ll avoid the argument and wish our Canadian neighbors a happy Thanksgiving! See? Peaceful. Nothing to it. Speaking of “nothing,” here’s today’s song with “nothing” in the title.
#2: Nothing Ever Happens Down Here - Gerry Rafferty
First, you won’t know this, because it wasn’t a hit.
Secondly, you’re probably thinking, “What, Gerry Rafferty recorded something other than ‘Baker Street’?” Indeed he did. And, if all you know is that dreamy excursion into great sax, then my suggestion is that you buckle your seat belt and put your tray in the upright position, ‘cause you’re cleared for takeoff!!!
Rafferty did a whole lot more than “Baker Street” (and “Stuck in the Middle With You” in his Stealer’s Wheel days). This is from an incredible album called North and South, and it shows just how criminal Rafferty’s status as an almost-one-hit-wonder in the US is.
This terrific tune is about a vacation that gets boring very quickly, to the point where “two weeks alone in this sweet little home and I feel like starting a riot.” The solution is to get the heck out of Dodge and “take a trip up north to Sauchiehall Street” (in Glasgow…Rafferty was Scottish).
I hope you enjoy this song, and I especially hope it opens your eyes to the vastness of Gerry Rafferty beyond “Baker Street.”

We don’t have our Thanksgiving until November, then we ruin it by, 24 hours after spending the day thankful for what we have, try to kill one another to get a $100 TV at Black Friday sales.
Hope you did at least enjoy the song.

@FourWalls You're not all that aggressive for a new set are you?
I have always wanted to experience American Thanksgiving by going away for the weekend there and then shopping on the following day, but perhaps I should buy some more life insurance first. ![](/Content/images/emotes/wink.gif)

@Juliaacv — I just got a new one in March. Didn’t have to get up at 2 AM and camp out at Best Buy or Walmart all night for it, either. Oh, AND Best Buy delivered it. ![](/Content/images/emotes/lol.gif)

“It’s pleasant” = “it’s not country.” ![](/Content/images/emotes/rofl.gif)

What a voice and a ditty of a song. Cool stuff there! And I would be amiss if I didn't give a shout out to another great Rafferty tune "Right Down the Line."

Me, too. They’re great neighbors. (I don’t think they’d say the same thing about us here in America, though…

I so enjoy these artists who “faded into obscurity” after one big hit or album. Rafferty had a lot of great music in his career.

It wasn’t all that great, music-wise, compared to the 70s or 60s (or earlier) but there was still a lot of great music out there.

Down where? Never heard about him or this song. Somehow the name is familiar though, Oh, yes, Baker Street I know very well forgot it was this singer,

Probably southern Scotland, given the mention of a Glasgow street later in the song.

You won’t. Don’t see you as a big Gerry Rafferty fan. And that’s sad because you could probably do a great version of “Whatever’s Written in Your Heart.”
