Can you tell what this is? (Hint: I went to an Asian grocery the other night.)

Last night, I made a really nice dinner for myself in celebration of getting my truck back. It involved the "star" of this photograph, but also many other ingredients, including onion, zucchini, etc. I post about that when I "develop" my photo. This photo is one of my early "experiments" (a few days ago) with my impulse purchase. This quick soup was tasty, but didn't compare with what I had last night.

Heh. It does! Or brains. It's chicken buillon with shitake mushrooms.

@TheHorse I don’t eat the chicken but I like the bullion with a few veggies in it.

It looks kind of like brains to me. Or some unspeakable gland. But the star of the photo was meaty and fairly tasty. A bit tough, though.

A dried fungus indeed! A perfect term, given their lack of visual appeal. I will try OYSTER mushrooms next time.

Yep. I made some chicken broth (buillon courtesy of the Mexican grocery), and then added some broken up shitake mushrooms. They're interesting, but I'll try another kind of mushroom next time. Shitakes are quite chewy.

It is! But since I made this soup (which some find ugly looking--can you imagine that?) I've been experimenting with shitake mushrooms in other recipes. They are WONDERFUL fried with olive oil and soy sauce (I soaked them in water first). I had them beside my steak sandwich lunch today.

@oahuwriter I am finding that they work best when allowed to soak up something robust and flavorful.

I can see the stalk of mushroom there. It looks like a mushroom stalk to me. Not sure though. This definitely doesn't look palatable to me. But glad that it was delicious and you enjoyed it.

It looks horrid, doesn't it? I just made an afternoon snack using the same, and it was delicious! I'm learning how to use these things.

@JudyEv As a friend said, they soak up what's around them. They're OK in chicken broth but really good in dishes involving soy sauce and onions.

I have to say that does not look very inviting. But good food doesn't have to in order to taste good. I will take your word for it. lol
