Review of the 1931 Movie, Dracula

I enjoy watching vintage movies from about 1935 until 1959. During the 60s I think a lot of the movies during that time were a lot of the most idiotic and uninteresting ones of all time. I also think that a lot of the earlier movies were more authentic and real looking of say cowboy and horror genres. I have watched a lot of Dracula and vampire movies. I list these both separately because I think they are totally different. The Dracula movies usually have close to the storyline of Bram Stoker's book by the same name. Vampires are usually about a vampire character, hunting them, or some clan of them and their story. In the 1931 version Bela Lugosi plays the role of Count Dracula so authentically you would think you were seeing the real deal. His accent is perfect and sounds just like someone from Transylvania. I think this version follows the storyline of the book very well. The character of the estate manager, Renfield, is played by Dwight Frye and he does probably the best acting of any I have seen. When he is under the vampire's spell and is sent to the asylum his acting is so realistic. He should have won an academy award for his performance. Also, the castle that Dracula lives in is so realistic. It is huge and reminds me of the one seen in the Orson Welles film "Citizen Kane". It is magnificent. This is a great film and one I would put right at the top of the list. The picture is courtesy of Free Stock.

I agree with you that the classic movies from the era you mention were authentic to the story and not updated by the studios to push an agenda in the name of progression.

Yes, nor updated hair-do-wise or fashion-wise either.

I'll watch that one some time. We've been watching the horror series that Boris Karloff did. Just wow. And Vincent Price in the good old days. I love those old time castles and Victorian mansions with their halls and laboratories in the basement.

@celticeagle I would love a turret but do not want a basement. Seen too many horror movies. I technically sleep in an attic, I guess.

@sallypup .......I understand. I don't like basements or attics. I would like to live in a haunted house. Not an evil haunt but just someone who lived there and doesn't want to leave.

I recognise Bela. I assume the other guy in the clip is Dwight. He was a cutie.

Yes, I think the castle is enormous and reminds me very much of the mansion where Citizen Kane lived. So, you enjoy the oldies too. That's cool.

I love the old horror movies too. I think that the 80s had a slew of good movies as well. Since then it's been pretty lean. Hope you have a good weekend.

Yes, the 80's had some good ones. In the 90's the superheros started. Some were good.

@celticeagle I don't care for the superheros/comic book characters. There seems to be so many of those today.

I don't remember if I had watched this. It's Christopher Lee whom I remember watched his movie as a Dracula.
