The name 'Rochester' turns up again

In discussion with @Fleura on my post about the rakali (Australia’s native otter) we were talking about how names of animals, birds and places are/were replicated from country to country. So Australia, America and Britain all have robins but they’re all slightly different. Fleur mentioned that there is a town in Kent, England called Rochester, and that there are 17 Rochesters in America. I googled Rochester and found one in Australia, just north of Melbourne. Well, 'our’ Rochester has been in the news lately as it is one of the towns which has suffered flooding over the past few days. Other towns which are now inundated with evacuations in place are Echuca and Moana. These are virtually the one town but separated by the Murray River. We stayed at Moana in the caravan in 2018. The photo was taken in Echuca. Echuca was an important inland port for paddle steamers. And now it’s all under water.

I was going to say that I read about your Rochester because of the recent flooding. This paddle steamer is beautiful, sorry for the town of Echuca.

It's hard to imagine that the caravan park where we stayed is now all under water.

@LadyDuck That's so true. As it is, our friends attended a family reunion over there and only just got out in time although they didn't realise it.

Despite signs of unusual weather conditions occurring in many parts of the planet, there are still global warming deniers.

That's true but they must surely be feeling less confident in their opinion.

@JudyEv Looks like more flooding given the news about moisture coming from the Indian Ocean heading for Australia as well as the "El Nina". Very unfortunate for the people already suffering the effects of the floods.

These extreme weather events are only going to get worse. People who think we have mastery over nature are getting a rude awakening! Nice photo!

@JudyEv I guess it's still possible to argue that it may not be caused by human activity. But either way does it matter? It's happening and if we are to continue to live comfortably we need to try to mitigate the effects!

Surely there can't be many who now believe that climate change is a bit of a myth. We are getting plenty of evidence to the contrary.

I caught a bit about the flooding on the news. It seemed to come out of the blue, normally we get a heavy rains expect in the area and then the aftermath.

The floods over there seem to have caught most people unawares. And there is more rain forecast for the weekend.

@Ronrybs It's beginning to get that nothing much really surprises us. At least, not like it used to.

@JudyEv I saw on news that the American north east has had massive snow falls, very early in the year. Climate change having some fun?

@RubyHawk Some have been flooded more than once. I think a few might rethink their options.

It's very sad. It must be such a mess to have your house flooded and then you have to try to clean it all up.

@CarolDM Some of the towns located on the river in the east are below river level. They might be building more levees in the future.

@JudyEv Whan I lived in New Orleans it was really bad when it rained. The city is below sea level on any given day. Add floods or just heavy rains and you can lose it all.

I think I drive through the outskirts of the city but have never been in it.. anyway there’s a Rochester Ny that is a few hours from me. One of the myLot members who isn’t active now @Painsonslate grew up there if I remember correctly.

@JudyEv me too. She vacationed in the summer near where I did and wanted to meet up with her but she hasn’t been around and I haven’t been back to that area.

They are forecasting more rain for that same area. It's just awful and not much they can do to avoid being flooded out.

So one can write a complete book on Rochesters of the world ! May be when immigrants from a country go elsewhere, they carry the names as well. In a similar way to Rochester, I have found Delhi outside India as well. Like this : -

@JudyEv The above mentioned Indian name city seems to have mostly white natives. May be they said "Delhh - I " and then the name of the place came to be worded like that !

Lovely paddlewheeler. Had you ever been on it? Will the flood waters recede or is everything destined to stay under?

When we were there the river was hardly running enough to keep the steamers operational.
