My Favorite Funny Titled Songs #8

I really enjoy listening to a cleverly written tune by an artist/band who takes a break from writing about serious issues to record a song with a funny/silly/unusual lyrics or title. Afterall, even a serious songwriter has a sense of humor. So, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the number of songs I really liked when putting together this series. Let's see how many of them you find enjoyable as well...
Nothing like an artist using a Halloween reference as inspiration to write a song. Not sure if these tunes are specifically about "trick of treating," but I think they sure could be. Anyway, with Halloween almost here, I think these fun titles definitely fit with that "spooky theme."
See if you agree with me... Happy Haunting! Comments, musings, your own favorite funny Halloween titled songs and trivia welcome...
1. Witch Doctor- David Seville
-The video is as humorous as this song about witchcraft. You won't be disappointed listening to this huge chart hit from 1958. David Seville, whose real name was Ross Bagdasarian, was the creator of Alvin and The Chipmunks, a group made up of three animated chipmunks, with squeaky human voices.
2. I Put A Spell On You- Screamin' Jay Hawkins
- This song was also covered by Credence Clearwater Revival in 1968. A spooky tune about putting a curse on the girl he lost so he can have her back fits right in with Halloween. Hawkins would perform his 1957 hit on stage with a flaming coffin, while holding a skull on a stick, creepy! Along with costumes and kids getting candy this song is very popular at this time of year.
3. Magical Mystery Tour- The Beatles
-A song with "magic" in the title certainly fits on Halloween. Plus, the Beatles were doing a little magic of their own experimenting with drugs and music too. Yes, this 1967 tune is "hoping to take you away" on a magic trip to an unknown destination.
Not so fun fact: Charles Manson used to refer to life as "A Magical Mystery Tour" after hearing this song. Of course, Manson was a sociopath, someone who would fit right in with Freddy Krueger, Jason, and Michael Myers, all sick movie characters associated with Halloween movies, who terrorized their neighborhoods.
TRIVIA CHALLENGE
***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play along. See if you can guess these selections and the bonus... Words in "quote marks" provide valuable clues!
Name today's tune, artist or facts:
1. This artist is no "Stranger in the Night" when it comes to recording classic songs and making them chart hits. This 1950 classic was about a woman whose got the guy under "her spell." Her charm is irresistible so much so that he thinks she's practicing "________________." As with all of his tunes this singer had his own unique style. And if you asked him, the singer would say "I did it My Way."
-Do you know the name of this crooner who was nicknamed "The Chairman of the Board" and the title of the sultry love song he sang?
2. This 1968 song is about drug abuse; an invitation to a journey where "fantasy will set you free." And the singer in this tune likes to take these "magical" trips and "dream, right between the sound machine." And the "transportation" he takes to ride on his journey is something "right out of Arabian Nights." You might know this band from another of their big 60's hits called "Born to be Wild."
-Can you name the band and their song about experiencing a ride on drugs?
3. The singer wrote this song about feeling alienated because if your different, then other "people" seem different to you. Kind of like on Halloween when "people" are dressed in weird costumes and you're not, you feel "strange." Anyway, the band performed "this song" and "Light My Fire" on the Ed Sullivan show. When the singer disobeyed Sullivan's request not to sing the line "Girl we couldn't get much higher" on the song "Light My Fire," he was so angry he vowed to never have them return again. Fun fact: Sullivan had them back again!
-Do you know the name of this "L.A." based band and their song with the unusual title?
I would have to put you in the "funny farm" if you are unable to solve at least one of these artists/songs on this quiz. If you're stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. Or as The Temptations would say... "Don't be too Proud to Beg."
Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! I will return with a new edition soon. Hope you can wait till then, lol. Stay tuned...
