The top two songs here on the countdown of favorite “something” songs will shock you. You probably never saw #1 coming. As for this song, it has the country music warning attached to it. You look at who did it and think “Really?” Really. Here’s today’s song.
#2: Something to Believe In - Steve Miller Band
Remember the end of Planet of the Apes when Taylor said he wanted to kiss Zira, and she hesitated and said, “But you’re so damned ugly!”? That’s how you might feel about this song. It’s an amazing love song…but it’s so damned country!
Yeah, that Steve Miller. He grew up in Texas, and Texans do love their country music.
So, amid the blues (“Evil,” “Come on In My Kitchen”) and the rock hits (“The Joker”), ol’ Stevie Guitar Miller grabbed legendary steel player Sneaky Pete Kleinow, known for being in the Flying Burrito Brothers and working with the Grateful Dead (and composing the theme to the TV show Gumby!), and recorded a real country, real love song.
It has beautiful imagery (“like clear water in a mountain stream I will come to you in your dream, like pictures reflected in a mountain lake I will be with you when you wake”), and Miller sings it in a quiet, almost whisper voice to give the song full impact.
Bet you didn’t know Steve Miller had any of this in him!

I think it’s beautiful. The people who don’t like country music might not agree with me, though.
I hope you know tomorrow’s song (or group), since they’re from your “neck of the woods.”

@JudyEv — that’s okay. Lots of American bands I’ve never heard of!

@FourWalls I'll watch out for it - but with a certain amount of trepidation. What if I've never heard of them??

BIG FAT slope right back at you. I watched Bret Michaels’ Rock My RV on the Travel Channel, but that’s as close to Poison as I’ve ever been.

Yeah, can’t have FM rock, top 40, blues, and country on the same album anymore.

There’s a more “cawntree” song (“Dance Dance Dance”) on Fly Like an Eagle. He’s had his moments (“Going to the Country”). Not many, but he has had them.

@FourWalls I will check that one out as well. The country sound is such a big difference for sure.
