What a strange story!

I was just searching for something online and, as often happens, I found something completely different. This story about the recent death of the ‘world’s dirtiest man’ who finally died at age 94 after being persuaded to take a shower not long before. Of course headlines can be misleading, saying he didn’t shower for 60 years could mean that he simply had baths instead.... but it seems that this man really did avoid any kind of washing for somewhere between 60 and 70 years and had various other rather nasty habits as well. The same story is reported by a whole slew of news outlets, at least some of which are reasonably credible! He lived outdoors, sleeping in a hole in the ground, until a few years ago when villagers apparently built him a concrete block shack to sleep in. Then earlier this year they persuaded him to wash, in the hope that being a bit cleaner would help him find some female companionship. I have to admit that I’m not sure that would be enough – his habit of smoking animal faeces, or a handful of cigarettes at once, would be somewhat offputting as well, I would have thought. But in any case it was in vain, as he sickened and died a few months later.
An Iranian man dubbed the 'dirtiest man in the world' for not taking a shower for decades has died at the age of 94, state media have reported.

Despite all his awful habits, he sure lived a long time. And under awful conditions. I'm not sure what the moral is here.

He looked as if he spent his life in an ash-heap, and maybe that had some sort of disease-preventing effect... who knows.

@JudyEv If Putin does his worst we'll all be living in holes in the ground anyway - at least, those of us that are left...

I read the story the other day. Sort of bizarre for sure. Amazing to live so long.

The part that caught me was that he is 94 years old and someone wanted him to try n get a female companion. Er...... RIP - he lived life the way he wanted to and was probably happier than most of the world!

Yes, I wonder why they didn't think of that sooner? I wonder whether he was actually happy? He looked rather is if he was just existing, but then what do I know?

@pitstop I hope he was, it's a long time to live if he was unhappy.

Some have longevity drowned in misery and also living with a nasty partner. If dirt can keep a person to live that long wonder all the care we take to keep ourselves clean is really called for (l.ol)

I guess not! But then I hate being grubby and I like the company of other people so I will continue to wash!

I have read the story online.I think he had great powers of resistance. He revealed that the reason why he didn't take a bath was that he wanted to keep the smell of deceased wife.

@Fleura Maybe it was set in his ways. However He was still concerned about his personal appearance, trimmed (burned) his hair, beard regularly, and liked to look in the mirror.

I didn't see that part. Surely that smell must have worn off many years ago. I wonder whether he was happy to live that way, or if it just became a habit that he couldn't get away from?

Yeah, I read that story too. Perhaps he never would have taken the step to take a bath, he would have been dirty still, but could survive a few more years.

It does seem rather late to start the search for a companion!

I don't know, the whole story raised so many questions. Did he earn a living during that long life? Was he happy? Did he just rely on handouts for clothes and food?

Yeah, I'm sure getting clean is what killed him...
