Mucinex time! I’ve described sinus infections has feeling like Keith Moon and Phil Collins in my sinuses, having a drum-off. Throw in John Bonham and sledgehammers instead of drumsticks and you may get the idea. But that’s not your problem. Your problem is enjoying these songs I’m giving you. This countdown started after JJ said he was happy I didn’t use a Poison song that had the same title as a song that I did use. So here’s another great song that just so happens has the same name as a Poison tune.
#7: Cry Tough - Nils Lofgren
I saw this on the list of songs in the Poison discography and thought, “Oh, no, they didn’t!” (I was worried because they did cover Loggins & Messina’s “Your Mama Don’t Dance.”) No, they didn’t. Completely different song. I was worried for a few minutes, though, because there’s only ONE “Cry Tough,” and it’s this fabulous Nils Lofgren song.
Before he played guitar with Neil Young on the Trans tour, and before he replaced Miami Steve in the E Street Band, Nils Lofgren had his own career, thank you very much.
And this song got a lot of FM rock airplay when it came out in 1976. It has some funny lines in it (“I promised this girl, if I can’t dance she’s gonna break my nose;” “I’ve been a cripple since they threw me in school”), some excellent guitar work, and a fine salute to “another dose of rock and roll.”
Rock on, Nils.

You know why because they knew was my birth date year. First 46 years of my life I finally figured out why they told me to cry tough. I cried tough then, not really, like a baby, now at 46 I can finally say I cry tough, not really like a baby. Come on that was funny.

No, you are supposed to sleep like a baby (not cry like one). Wake up every hour and cry. (George Jones song.)

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It brings back good memories of listening to FM rock sitting on beach after work when I was 17.

Nils is more than a sideman. I wish he had a little more success than as one of Springsteen’s sidemen.
