We attended a Melbourne Cup lunch today

Australia’s most famous horse race, the Melbourne Cup, was run today. Here in Western Australia, we are three hours behind so we rocked up to the clubhouse at our retirement village at 10.30am to be met with a glass of champagne (or orange juice), complete with strawberries floating in them. The room was decorated with balloons and two-legged horses and the whole room looked very festive. Everyone bought tickets in the sweeps and drew a horse’s name which added to the excitement of watching the race, which took place at midday, our time. After watching the race, it was time for lunch. The meal was delicious and included a variety of meats and salads. Later, there was cheesecake and filled doughnuts for those who had any room to spare. Vince took over 70 photos of the attendees and has just put them up on the website. So it was a very enjoyable and relaxing day. The photo was taken by Vince.

The champagne with strawberries in it sounds lovely. But the best part of all to me would be the cheesecake and filled doughnuts.

It was a fun day. There were lots of fascinators worn by the ladies too.

Did the horse of your choice win? I live too far away from the big horse race in my country and I honestly don't even know when the Kentucky Derby is run.

Oh no, why weren't you allowed to chose a horse you'd want?

We put our names down on a list but didn't know which horse we'd drawn until after the list was full. We didn't get to pick our own horses.

@rebelann Because there weren't enough horses for everyone and most would have wanted the same two or three horses. It was all a bit of fun. You could have bet on your choice with a bookmaker or online but this was all fun stuff really. You paid a small amount to go in a sweep. There were about 24 horses so, for instance, if you paid $2 each, that's $48. Whoever had the winning horse probably to $30, then second place perhaps $12 and third $6. I'm just guessing but it would be something like that. They had $2, $5 and $10 sweeps.

Yes, anyone from the village could come. You had to put your name down and there was a fee to cover the meal. There will be a Christmas luncheon later but that will be limited to 80 people. More than that and the clubhouse gets a bit too full for comfort - especially if a meal is being served.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The race was in Melbourne but we watched it on the big screen in the clubhouse.

NOOO!!! We drew for horses but I didn't really know any of them anyway. There were about ten sweeps held and our friends got three placings then the husband won the best 'men's hat' so they did really well.

They sometimes call it 'the race that stops a nation'. It's often an overseas horse that wins it nowadays but not always.

@JudyEv I suppose the Grand National falls into that category. I am sure it is probably the same here, horses from overseas winning all!
