"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"~ Albert Einstein This post was supposed to be about some scientific research on proof that a messy desk and workspace establish the owner as being a creative person open to new and novel ideas. While that of a clean and neat desk, those who behave more conventionally and do what was expected of them. In my case, I'm more of the latter type which borders on OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). So you can imagine how agitated I was when I made a comment on a post of "The Horse" and saw a photo of his messy desk accompanying his article "How do I explain written language to a cat? OMG! Kitty just did something she's never done before as I was writing my headline!" (There outta be a law against kilometric titles. Thankfully there is copy and paste) The above photo is of Einstein at work at his desk. I thought it prudent not to copy The Horse's photo to avoid copyright infringement that might result in a lawsuit and garnishment of my mylot earnings of $1.0343 Genius or just need a bigger desk? And yours?

I am in the middle, I cannot stand a cluttered desk, but mine is not as tidy as I would like it to be. I prefer not to show a photo of my husband's desk, and the empty chair near his desk... and the floor!!! He surely is a genius.

Does your husband also forbid others not to tidy up his desk and workspace?

@josie_ EXACTLY!!! I sometimes I move books and papers to clean. I take photos of the mess, so I place back things as they were, he usually does not notice I touched his precious things.

@LadyDuck Your comment made me laugh (LOL) You would make a good spy. You actually take a photo in order to put things back so he does not notice?

I definitely agree with the theory of genius being accompanied by a messy desk, and I don't say that just because I keep a very cluttered, messy desk—although remarkably I know where everything is, and even if it appears everything is out of place, it is a literal organized disarray that I keep. I guess in a way it is also a product of being artsy. And certainly, The Horse and I share some air of that. Too much structure and the art can't breathe, you know. And sometimes genius is the product of beautiful mistakes that can only be discovered in the grander mess of things. As for getting bigger desks, it would only add more room to make more mess. Just my two cents worth, that due to inflation may only be worth a half a cent.

It is fine if you managed to turn your "organized disarray" into a working system. But I suspect other messy desks came into existence because of the habit of putting off things and laziness. More so as the clutter continue to pile up. But one can always excuse this fancy mess by saying your desk is a canvass inspired by an abstract Picasso or surrealist Dali. With regards to your inflation-induce half a cent, the coming presidential election will decide it's lot.

@josie_ Most of the people who are organized I find can't find a damn thing. lol That's a true story, by the way.

I gave up on desks when I retired. I have a rolling cart for my tablet/laptop, and it’s sturdy enough for me to write my check out on (that’s right, one check a month I write anymore…everything else is automatic). The Horse is a completely different case from Einstein.

I see your point. Most people transact their business on their cell phones. My grandchildren no longer use laptops for gaming. even online classes because of the pandemic are done through their cp. I'm a dinosaur by comparison. The Horse's desk is more of a windowsill desk type. Something an Einstein would never use. Too much outside distraction.

OCD is a mental disorder, that most people display, yet without a clue that anything is abby-normal! Does Horse have OCD? He's one of the fear members on MyLot, who's completely honest about his personal existence! I appreciate this quality in a man, though some people don't like being confronted with facts Communicating with a cat? This is possible, if a person is truly listening:) I talked to my dog every day and he spoke back:)

@josie_ Animals do speak, we must learn how to be a good listener.

Can't say if The Horse has OCD but his desk definitely is EDC (Excessive Disorder Compliant) I hope someday a language app that translates dog speak to man speak will be available. I hate to have my dogs mutiny or revolt because of a language barrier.

I also disagree with the quote. Some creative people like to work in a neat and organized workspace.

You made me laugh, . You can be funny when you chose to dear Josie. In being neat bordering on OCD that sounds like me too. However, many people who are intelligent usually have cluttered desks, but does that mean I'm dumb? . I don't think so. There are also geniuses who are like OCDs, so it could depend on the early practices of the person as he/she was growing up.

I think Einstein is justifying his cluttered desk. I want to tidy my desk up, when I’m done using it. It becomes really cluttered though when I am accomplishing something. But I organize . I know I don’t like wasting time looking for stuff. I also tidy up my desk before I start working.

I don't believe it. Clean and tidy desk is a sign of a person who well-organized. It doesn't mean that his mind is empty.
