Lunar eclipse on 8th November 22 and the myth related to it in India

Tomorrow, 8th November 22 is 'Lunar eclipse ' and in India, especially in Odisha there are lot of customs related to it. The temples don't perform their regular prayers and rituals until the eclipse is over. Temples and houses in most conservative families are washed with water after the eclipse and most people in Odisha observe a fast. They believe that eating during the eclipse can cause ill health especially to the gut and skin. People stay indoors and don't go out for fear of getting affected by the ultra violet rays that the moon would emit soon after the eclipse.
I think these customs are no more reasonable for we aren't staying in huts with thatched roofs anymore that would affect our food and skin. In those days the ultra violet rays penetrated the house through the straw roof that contaminated the food. However now we stay in houses with concrete roof so we are safe from ultra violet. I therefore go by any customs which my mother did. I cook, eat ,drink and lead a normal life, only I don't go out to expose myself. What's your idea about 'Lunar eclipse '?

@Beestring I see. In India people with some zodiac sign are advised not to view the eclipse as it may bring bad luck. That's what astrologers say.

@MALUSE I mean no customs related to it now. In ancient China, solar and lunar eclipses were regarded as heavenly signs that foretold the future of the Emperor.

We don't practice any customs during lunar eclipses, during solar eclipses people are advised not to look at the sun or eclipses directly because the UV could damage the eyes, and that's true because there's a scientific basis to this.
People in the coastal areas are however advised to watch out for high tides during lunar eclipses, as they can be unpredictable supposedly based on some people's experiences.
Enjoy your viewing of that phenomenon.

I am not viewing the phenomenon as it's cold outside and astrologers in India say for people with pisces moon sign it's unlucky and I believe in astrology. I study about astrology too.

@aninditasen I see. I too often read the predictions on my astrological sign because seemingly, there may not be a scientific basis for everything related to the stars/planet but there are many things even science can't explain.

@Jenaisle Astrology is science. The planets revolve round the Sun and exert a magnetic pull on the Earth . In return it exerts a magnetic pull on us because our blood contains iron and that affects our brain which runs our days accordingly and this is what Astrology speaks about.

That is interesting. We don't have such notions here.

That's good. You can live without any restrictions at home.

That's a ritual too. I live alone so didn't go by any restrictions. I did my normal prayers.

Yes, it is fascinating but I abstain from viewing it.
