Who's a pretty boy? Clancy is

My nephew is now breeding angora/mohair goats as well as other breeds. I put up a photo some months back but the goat didn’t have much fleece at the time. In this photo, you can see he has a bit more. This is the buck, Clancy. Soon he will be shorn. It will be interesting to see how much they get for the fleece as it’s supposed to be bringing a good price at the moment. Mohair dates back to the 16th century. The goats are native to the mountainous regions of Turkey although they are now bred in many parts of the world. Mohair is classified by the diameter of its fibre. Fine mohair is 19-23 microns in diameter; medium 23-28 microns and coarse 28-34 microns. Mohair is considered to be naturally hypoallergenic and isn’t itchy when worn against the skin.

@JudyEv That's what I was thinking. Are he and his herd more like pets?

@DaddyEvil Yes. There isn't a lot of them yet and they have a lot of interaction with their humans.

I don't think the fleeces weigh much but it's still quite valuable.

@JudyEv I'll be impressed if he can make a living from keeping goats. It's practically impossible here these days to make a living from any kind of agriculture unless you have a big farm, otherwise it's just a hobby.

My nephew has given up work so needs to sell goats to bring in an income. The wool would be a useful sideline.

Clancy is a cool looking goat. I've never tried on mohair clothing but then here it never gets cold enough to warrant wearing anything that warm.

You wouldn't need mohair where you live. We might need it if we get to Ireland next April! lol

@JudyEv Wool is itchy, but both my husband and I have worse reaction if we wear synthetic fibers.

Nice name for a goat. And she is priceless and I mean it as she is going to yield some expensive Mohair . We had Angora rabbits at my grandmother's place. I was not aware that we had Angora goats too

Clancy is beautiful.i don't think it's a goat.. because it's different from a goat.. it's a ram or ewe.. it's fleece doesn't cost much ..i think so...but if u r breeding it for meat then it's price may be higher

I can assure you it is a goat, not a sheep. It's bred for its fleece. There are other goat breeds that are bred for meat.

@Ajaz1234 It's okay. I know there are sheep breeds that look very similar but these goats belong to my nephew so I know they are not sheep. May I ask what country you live in? (You don't have to tell me if you'd rather not)
