A little vintage novelty

I thought @JudyEv might like this, I know she enjoys these quirky little vintage finds. This is just an ordinary dustpan and brush – or is it? It’s only about 6 inches across and the brush has quite short, rather stiff bristles. In fact it’s a crumb tray – for sweeping up crumbs and other scraps off the tablecloth. Obviously it can’t do much for spilled gravy but it does a pretty good job otherwise. And perhaps it looks a little bit nicer for clearing up around guests then using the dishcloth? (Of course it would be better if I gave it a bit of TLC!) All these odds and ends just collectively add up to so much ‘clutter’ of course when you can make do with a damp cloth but I do like having them! Mom had a crumb tray, I remember it very well, it was silver plated. I have seen it in her apartment when we were going through her things, I did not want it.

I think it's kind of cute, and the girls like playing with it. They like anything that's 'miniaturised'!

The crumb tray and brush can be called antiques ! At first sight I think it is a drawer ,then I rule out it, because I find that it is a trapezium.

You're right, it wouldn't work as a drawer! I think I will try to clean it up and maybe varnish it and it will look nicer.

It looks so much larger in your photo than it actually is. I remember reading a story (probably in French Lit) where they'd just brush the crumbs onto the floor and let the geese in to gobble them up...

A lot of people I've noticed do just brush the crumbs onto the floor - and where do they think they go?

We have glass top dining table but use a table cloth. Crumbs if any are picked up by hand.

Maybe you should have one of these! But I guess if you never eat things like crusty bread there won't be any crumbs.

Very cool! Wouldn't that be a topic of conversation at an eatery if the waiter/waitress use that device to clean the crumbs off the table

Maybe at one of those places where they try to be 'old-fashioned' with proper china cups and saucers and all that sort of thing

My aunt found an excellent tray that doesn't leave much to be cleared afterwards. Normally, the ones which I have, there is gap between floor and the tray, if we tilt too much, the dust is not collected - it slips off, if we keep it horizontal or slightly tilted, the dust remains under the tray. So kinda, I am going to ask her, where she bought it from. Not that we think much ...nowadays we use vacuum, but for small small cleaning, it helps.

Some things just seem... odd... to me. I've never seen anything like that but I was born into a poor family. Mom just used a washcloth to clean up spills and messes at the dinner table.

@Fleura True. If something was spilled on a tablecloth, when guests were there, mom just pulled the tablecloth off and we ate like we normally did without one.

Same here but then I guess for the occasions when you have a tablecloth, you can't just wipe up things with a damp rag!

One of many old things that have just been kept because... well what else would you do with them?

Thanks for the mention. I did know what this was and I have a plastic one. I find it really handy too but I do love yours.

I think I might try to renovate this one. We have another as well which is far more 1960s!

I know, although I have seen tiny vacuum cleaners for cleaning up crumbs so I guess that's the modern (and less eco-friendly) version!
