Top Ten Ruby Songs: See Ruby Fall (#10)

Last week I went to Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and started thinking about all the songs that have Ruby for the subject (the woman’s name, not the ruby gem). Not as popular as Sally (I did that one a few years ago), but we’re still gonna get some gems in this countdown. I used this one in my discussion of the attraction Ruby Falls, and here it is to open the countdown! #10: See Ruby Fall - Johnny Cash Back in the 50s Hank Thompson had that song about the “honky tonk angel” who “went back to the wild side of life.” Well, here she is, in all her phony luster. After this song, she’d be described again in the Shel Silverstein song “Queen of the Silver Dollar.” That’s the song’s story. The title comes from those ubiquitous “see Ruby Falls” ads all over the southeast. A couple of neighbors and Sun Records alums, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, took the slogan and turned it into this tune. Orbison, although co-writer, never recorded it.
