People collect some strange things, don't they?

Some months back, I wrote about a piano that was rotting away in a paddock. About a month after that, we went back there and the piano was no longer in the paddock. When I asked about it, it had been picked up. The insides have been stripped out and the outside somewhat restored. The man who took it collects furniture/carpet coasters/protectors and is displaying them in the piano case. It’s amazing what people collect, isn’t it? I’m afraid the idea of collecting carpet protectors leaves me a bit cold. I think he is mostly interested in old ones. The photo is of the piano in the paddock. You’ve seen it before.

Yes, I've seen some weird collections, especially online. At least I try to collect things that are worth money so Pretty can sell them someday and have some extra pocked change. Some dude online collects his own navel lint and saves it in jars... He was offering it for sale. Weird!

I've heard of this before. Who on earth would want to buy it? Only another weirdo I guess.

The dad of my cousin's husband loved to collect all sorts of old stuff - furniture, vase, carpet etc. He passed. It took his sons/daughters quite a while to clear the stuff.

Some people are very keen about collecting all sorts of things. It must be hard when they pass to try to find a home for things their loved one has treasured.

@JudyEv Yes, it was hard to find a place to keep all the stuff. I think they chose to keep some in better conditions.

I can't imagine what is special about them. I also find it hard to believe that there are many different types but I guess there must be.

@JudyEv It is also beyond me why some would collect things like carpet protectors.

I've used the same photo on this post. I can understand collecting the things you've mentioned but carpet protectors seems an odd choice. I guess they'd be cheap.

I remember this photo, poor piano, it was in a very bad shape. I agree that people collect the most weird things. My husband collected very old Disney Comics... I am thinking to sell them on e-Bay

@JudyEv They are in very good conditions, he never looks at them, I wonder why not to get rid of them.

@LadyDuck It can be hard to get rid of our special things. Maybe there are lot of memories tied up with the comics.

The piano looks in bad shape. I don't remember seeing it. I did miss that post. People have weird hobbies. Collection of small things doesn't require much of space. But furniture and stuffs like that would need a lot of space

@mayka123 I collected Beswick horses for a while. They are quite expensive china ornaments. Now I'm a bit sorry I did.

Yeah it makes me so surprised to see what all people like to collect. I was into a more "routine" kind of collection of Sports - mainly Cricket news clippings from the newspapers. I wonder how these collectors find the space in their house to do all such things and the time as well? Yet passion for something often makes us do a lot.

@JudyEv It was perhaps an in-thing till early 2000s. Then Internet took over in various forms.

When I was a child, making scrapbooks was popular. We'd cut out pictures or articles about whatever it was we were interested in.

We have an old piano rotting away in the one-room schoolhouse down the road from us. It probably isn't in much better shape than the one in the paddock.

@JudyEv There was a time when foot pedal pump organs were popular and no one wanted them anymore. My Dad picked one up at an auction ludicrously cheap. The guy he was bidding against wanted it for firewood. It's still with the family somewhere. I think one of my nieces has it.

At an auction, they weren't able to give this one away so it came out to the paddock. There are a lot of pianos being offered for free on our local Marketplace.

@JudyEv Maybe it's similar to collecting matchbooks from different bars and restaurants, if the coasters have something on them signifying where they're from or what they commemorate.

@DWDavis Could be. I don't recall any of the coasters I've seen being remarkable in any way. I'll have to do a bit more research.

I have no idea why they are collectible. I've never heard of anyone else collecting them. And I really don't know how old they'd be. I'll ask our contact when we see him again.

@TheHorse The ones I'm most familiar with are about the size of the bottom of a cup, slightly cupped and with carpet stuff on the bottom. You sit table and chair legs on them to protect the carpet.

One of my acquaintances also likes to collect, but trash that can no longer be used. I don't know what he's thinking. Such as bottles, broken plastic plates, cardboard, and other rubbish. But he just collects all of that, he doesn't recycle it, he doesn't even sell it. He forbids people to throw it away. The house looks so dirty.
