Braiding with horse-hair

An endurance riding friend of ours had an accident and fell from her horse, fracturing several bones in her back. She has spent months in a back brace with very limited movement. Thankfully, the brace has now been removed and she is very gradually returning to a more normal life. Her hobby is braiding from horse-hair, in particular hat-bands. You can see an example of her work in the photo. I’m sure occupying herself in this way has helped keep her sane these last few months. She collects the long tail hairs from her three horses. I think the hatband looks very attractive. The photo is used with my friend’s permission.

Your friend does a very nice job braiding hat bands. I'm quite sure doing that has helped her stay sane, too.

She has really had to rest a lot and for weeks. I'd probably get a lot of books read if it were me.

That was a bad fall, I hope your friend can recover and have a more normal life again. This is a pretty hat and a good use for horse hair.

@JudyEv I agree and those purple flowers down the hat are beautiful.

The hatband sets the hat off nicely.

What a kool craft. I hope she makes a full recovery and will eventually be able to get back on a horse.

@rebelann She may start just by volunteering for a while. It would get her out and about and in amongst her friends again. Not all the endurance riders live near each other.

The braiding is lovely. I'd love to know how she does it. One day I'll ask her if I can watch her doing it.

She has been a long time on bed rest. It would get very boring.

Never examined a horse's hair up close. The layout appears classy and appealing. Does she make it as a source of income or is it merely a hobby?

@JudyEv I guess you will need to have a lot of horses to have it commercialized.

Almost all these sorts of pastimes are just hobbies. It would be very difficult to make a living from this.

That’s quite attractive, and what a great use of something that would otherwise go to waste! Hope she’s doing well, although I wonder if she’ll ever ride competitively again.

I think she is expecting to ride again next season. I'd like to see her on a more laid-back steed. The one she has is beautiful but a bit quick to get upset.

Wow, that's beautiful! Being able to do something creative is a blessing when you have to kill a lot of time. I was very glad to be able to knit and such while recuperating from my knee surgery a while back. I'm glad she is doing better!

It would have to be fiddly work. Now I know she does it, I'll talk to her about it - how many strands, etc. I'm very intrigued.
