Half way around the world

Hi all, Momma and I were thinking of travel in Jan/Feb of the new year. Not just any travel, travel to Sydney, Australia. For reference, we are in Mid-Central Minnesota. Australia is quite literally half way around the world from us. Go any farther away, and you'd start getting closer. Here's a fun website that calculates what is half way around the world from you https://www.antipodesmap.com/ A number of reasons why Australia catches our eye, but one of which was that my long time friend, Grant, lives there. Grant is part of a rock and roll band - at first they were a tribute to Led Zeppelin. Now they are a tribute to British Rock. Apparently they are pretty well known locally. I have known Grant over 20 years online. We aren't particularly close, but we keep in touch every now and then through the years. Earlier on we communicated more. Well my mom really enjoys the videos his band posts, and we both wanted to see them play. So I thought why not? See Grant's band AND explore Australia. So over a month ago I sent him a message. Asked if he had any gigs coming up in end of Jan / early Feb. Told him we were planning on coming and wanted to catch the band in action. He said he'd get right back to me. Well... weeks went by, and I sent him a reminder. No response. A few days ago, I sent him another message.... I told him I'm not trying to make him crazy with all of this, but that there is a lot to be handled, including scheduling with my mom's doctors so that she is off of treatments while we're traveling, and if he had any idea of the band's schedule yet. Days have gone by, and no reply. I mean... sure... I know we aren't close, but if you have a friend coming from half way around the world to see you.... I really expected a little more enthusiasm anyway. I was sort of expecting him to perhaps offer getting together a day or 2 and then gig dates to see the band. The very least he could is that- If he doesn't know the schedule yet, tell me that. Well, he wasn't the only thing we were gonna see and do there. I had my heart set on Uluru, the Zoo, Ocean tours, Opals and maybe getting over to say hi to Judy and Vince ... however time is creeping up on making plans for this large of trip and there is much to consider. There are a lot of variables (currency exchange, getting phones for mom and I that will work there so we can keep in touch if separated from each other, documents, mom's doctor's appointments) not to mention the usual stuff like booking a hotel, and all that. I think we will wait with Australia , maybe next year. However we still plan to travel this winter. Just closer. Current thoughts are Arizona for the Grand Canyon or Hawaii. I still have many questions about travel since I haven't done it extensively. But it's something fun to think about. Thanks for reading , are you traveling anywhere? Photo: Pixabay user Patty Jansen

First of all, that was so rude of that guy not to respond in some way. I have a friend in Scotland that I went to 7th and 8th grade with that I would love to go visit. But age and health problems will probably prevent that. So, if you can arrange things with your mom's doctors, I say, go for it. Maybe not Australia, but anywhere different to see and experience. Keep us posted.

@FayeHazel Both places would be fun. My father was in the Coast Guard and I went my last two years of high school in Kaneohe Hawaii. Then a year later Dale and I got married there. We moved to NC when he got out of the Navy and I'd love to go back on vacation, but very far and very expensive. Let us know where you all decide to go.

@1creekgirl Oh wow, I can't imagine how fun and unique that must have been getting to experience senior year in Hawaii. Thanks to your dad for serving. What a place for a wedding. Alas you're right, I think it's going to cost a lot. AZ may win out. I hope you do go there though, after Scotland of course :-)

Thanks, that bothers me. I mean, even if he can't get together, or doesn't know the schedule... just to say something. Oh well. I hope you get to go to Scotland and see your friend. Thanks! Right now we are thinking Hawaii , or Arizona for the Grand Canyon

How strange of him to not respond at all, especially when he said he would get back to you. I was going to say it'd be neat to meet Judy and Vince out there too. Well hopefully you and your mom will make it to Australia soon - good that you will still be traveling somewhere though. Nope, no traveling for us . . . if anything it'd be somewhere where we could go by car to go day tripping.

@FayeHazel Right - he should say something at least - kinda not cool to leave you hanging like that. I await the post with a photo of you, Judy and Vince . We're just not ready for big traveling yet - plus there's stuff going on here that we don't have a chunk of time that we can all go. But maybe one day .

That's what really bugs me. I mean even if it's to say he's busy or he doesn't know... I would have thought he'd gotten back to me anyway. :/ Sorta rude. It'd be awesome to see Judy and Vince, they're amazing, always into something different. Don't blame you -- there must be lots of nice things to see and do near you in CA

@much2say Yeah, I'm really kinda disappointed in him. :/ But it's better to know now than to get all the way there and be disappointed. Maybe another time. Definitely want Australia in future though :-) Judy and Vince, yay! Ah understand. Sometimes it's getting the time to travel, too

Pretty and I traveled all over the US when I was younger but neither of us are really wanting to travel anywhere anymore. Travel is expensive and I have enough trouble talking her into going to the closest large cities to us if we don't have a doctor appointment there. IF you travel, I hope you both enjoy yourselves.

@FayeHazel I'm not into music at all. I prefer silence... pony and I argue about that all the time. He insists people can't live without music. I do just fine without it. *shrug* If she won't go 45 miles just for the heck of it, she sure won't go to a different state.

Yes for expensive, for sure. We never much got to , mom and I, I mean - with dad being as he was. Maybe there are sights close by you? Highly recommend Clear Lake , IA for it's Rock and Roll history if you're into that kind of thing. It's probably quite away for you though, it's northern IA

That's really sad that Grant hasn't replied. And very rude too. Even if he thinks he hasn't got time to meet you, he could at least reply. And good luck with your plans. I hope, when the time comes, you're able to include WA.

Thanks... yeah it really has me stumped. I mean, unless something else is going on for him I don't know about? But still, seems odd in 6 weeks to not be able to say he can't reply right now, if nothing else... Ah I think we will still will travel this winter, though closer by. I still have Australia on my want to see list, fairly high on there. :-) It would be great to meet

My relatives were planning to travel to a beach town in Texas 2023 near Beaumont. As of now it is not known if the vacation will take place until our finances get better.
