A Nankeen night heron

I wrote once about Nankeen night herons (Nycticorax caledonicus) but had to use a photo from Wikimedia. Now I have an adequate photo of my own. We saw several at our last house-sit. This one was on the decking at the front of the house. It and Pepper regarded each other for a while but neither considered the other a threat and they each went their separate ways. They are supposed to emerge at twilight and roost during the day but we’ve seen them early afternoon here. They have a large head but short neck so much of the time they look very round-shouldered. They are also known as the ‘rufous night heron’ because of the rich cinnamon-coloured upperparts. He does look hunched over, doesn’t he?

He looks like he wants to take a bite of something right in front of him...

There wasn't much to eat right there but I guess he's watching for a fish.

@JudyEv Is he close to the water there? It looks like he's holding onto a railing of some type.

@DaddyEvil Yes, he was on a bridge. I got photos of a different one on the private jetty but this one was on a footbridge.

That's a fairly large bird but I've never seen one before, I doubt we ever get them here. Yeah, he does look kinda hunched over.

That explains it. Sometimes I wish dad had taken an assignment somewhere that had lakes and such, oh well, at least I live in a relatively safe area weatherwise.

They're water birds so you may not have them there.

He does seem hunched and his tail feathers look very short. Is that a trick of the angle of the photo or do these birds have short tail feathers.

They do have a stumpy tail. He looks 'old' hunched over like that.

They look as if they might overbalance because of their lack of much tail! Cool that he came to visit.

Hunched over, and bob tailed. Not at all like one would expect a heron to look. The colors are rich, though.

I like their cinnamon colour, it looks like he should lose the balance, but he is strongly attached to the railing.

Yes, he does look hunched over. He's a weird looking bird, or I should say, he doesn't look anything like birds I see.
