I wrote once about Nankeen night herons (Nycticorax caledonicus) but had to use a photo from Wikimedia. Now I have an adequate photo of my own.
We saw several at our last house-sit. This one was on the decking at the front of the house. It and Pepper regarded each other for a while but neither considered the other a threat and they each went their separate ways.
They are supposed to emerge at twilight and roost during the day but we’ve seen them early afternoon here. They have a large head but short neck so much of the time they look very round-shouldered. They are also known as the ‘rufous night heron’ because of the rich cinnamon-coloured upperparts.
He does look hunched over, doesn’t he?

He looks like he wants to take a bite of something right in front of him...

@JudyEv Is he close to the water there? It looks like he's holding onto a railing of some type.

@DaddyEvil Yes, he was on a bridge. I got photos of a different one on the private jetty but this one was on a footbridge.

Hunched over, and bob tailed. Not at all like one would expect a heron to look. The colors are rich, though.

Nice, he posed for you. Long legs and yes a very short neck. He does seem a bit hunched.

He is not the most brightly coloured but still quite attractive.
