What's simplest reason why the motor won't start

I wrote about the compactor that we’re using to prepare a path ready for brick-laying. What I forgot to tell you was that, after we unloaded it, we couldn’t get it started. It has its own motor but no way would it start. Vince and his brother both pulled and pulled on the starter cord, all to no avail. As it hadn’t been used for about twelve months, we thought maybe something had corroded but really, we had no idea what could be wrong. Then, just as I was about to say ‘what’s the simplest thing it could be’, my brother-in-law had a light-bulb moment, turned on the ‘ON’ switch, pulled the starter cord, and all was well. The photo is of a very pretty bowl that was sitting on the ledge of the open porch. It looked much too antique and valuable to be in such a position.

I'm glad your brother-in-law figured out the problem.

He saved them some dollars...imagine she would have loaded it in the vehicle taken it back to the shop and had a heated argument there with the guy ...(she is cool so ...not sure about that anyway), but well, trying to return such an expensive thing, means loss of some money too. I think her brother in law deserves a nice large vanilla ice cream, and a nice cake...since he cannot get Andhra Mango pickle and rice.

@vandana7 I'm willing to bet that they rented the compactor so the worst that would have happened is that she'd be embarrassed and the loss of the time driving the compactor back to the rental place and then back to the house again.

@DaddyEvil Oh dear...but she would get another there, and face the same issue. What is your objection to her brother-in-law eating nice large Vanilla ice cream and a nice cake?

There were four of us standing around looking at it! Wondering why it wouldn't start.

They belong to stone age...they didn't know what is "switch". What is on, and what is off.

I am glad that someone noticed that the switch was not ON, at least you could continue your job.

@JudyEv - Often it is a very simple thing that prevents machines to work.

It isn't the first time that there has been a very simple solution to one of our problems!

You mean before it was damaged permanently with so many attempts at starting cord?

It was simply a matter of switching on the ON button.

Yes, always make sure it's actually turned ON or plugged in before complaining that something won't start.

Glad he thought about the switch. I agree, I would be afraid to have that setting there.

@wolfgirl569 I was concerned all the time we were there, not that we were in danger of knocking it off but we did have lunch up on the porch.

I'm sure it's antique. It just has that look. I might ask her on Thursday.

I should have turned it a fraction to get a photo of the decoration.

Pretty vase. Looks like a hibiscus bloom behind it maybe. The ON switch is very important.
