Sorry I’m late. Same reason as two weeks ago: had lunch with family. I didn’t forget you all, so here’s the next song on the list of songs with “the ballad of” in the title. And, boy, I hope you knew this one was coming!! #4: The Ballad of Jed Clampett - Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs But of course! The theme to the legendary TV series The Beverly Hillbillies was a massive hit for bluegrass legends Flatt & Scruggs. They actually recorded the song before the series aired, but the theme in the TV show was sung by Jerry Scoggins. Lester and Earl were proving the musical background, though. In fact, Flatt & Scruggs made a few appearances in the show, as friends of the Clampetts. Roy Clark appeared as Cousin Roy (and played Mother Myrtle in one episode). The series in the early 60s was sponsored by Kellogg’s, featuring commercials by Homer & Jethro. So it was pure country fun all the way around. This is one of the best-known TV theme songs of the 60s, thanks to the outstanding musicianship of the bluegrass icons. The Ballad of Jed Clampett Written by Paul Henning Recorded by Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs From Hard Travelin’, 1962 Jed, move away from there!

@RebeccasFarm — John Hartford once famously said, “No, Earl Scruggs didn’t invent the three-finger style of banjo playing; however, if it wasn’t for Earl Scruggs, nobody would care who DID.”

Bluegrass music is pretty exclusively American, but its happiness goes the world over.

A great theme song for a TV series Fun fact: During my college years I saw the Earl Scruggs Revue. They were very popular on the college circuit back then. That bluegrass will get those feet to stomping

Earl went more “progressive” while Lester formed the Nashville Grass (which at one point featured a young Marty Stuart on mandolin) and stayed traditional.

@FourWalls I see. Marty Stuart is a name I recognize from the Ken Burns doc on country music. Nice fact there!

I remember that programme. We got it here in Scotland about a year after it first aired in the States. Good clean fun - not like some of the garbage we see today

It was quite popular in its day, and it still is here, in reruns. I’m not sure how the southern humor translated overseas, but I enjoyed it even as a kid (although none of my “country” relatives talked like that).

@FourWalls Southern humour translates very well to Scotland (well, at least, to me). I thought the programme was excellent and could be very funny at times

Yup, much obliged for that. Will you also play The Ballad of Buster Scruggs? Or how about The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle?

Three to go: pop, rock, country. Not exactly in that order.

They were everywhere. They even had their own TV show in the early 60s!
