And now, the sappy love song!!! That’s right, we’ve been through true stories, composite characters, and my usual “what the heck is that!!!” songs. For your reward of making it to the top spot, you get….THIS. I can’t help myself. Here’s my favorite “ballad of” song.
#1: The Ballad of Lovers Hill - Teresa Brewer
Yes, amid all the Hank Williams and Ramones stuff I have a deep-seeded fondness for Teresa Brewer. Her best-remembered song is “Music! Music! Music!,” which she recorded when she was all of 18. What a voice!!!
Amid all the hillbilly records my parents had a 1962 album of her’s. I loved that album. I still do!
This song, about a couple who get married the day the new husband has to leave to fight “with Stonewall Jackson at the Battle of Chancellorsville” (which is where General Jackson was mortally wounded by friendly fire) in the Civil War. After the war, he returns to his wife and they live happily ever after.
As for songwriting, co-writer Kay Twomey is remembered for writing “Serenade of the Bells” and “Wooden Heart.”
I just remember this as a great song.
Thanks for reading.

At least you remember her! I consider that a victory, given how long ago her career was.

Can't ever heard a Teresa Brewer song without thinking of my dad. He loved her and I grew up listening to all her music. A blast from the past for me

@FourWalls We had one of those console stereos too. My dad passed away in 1981 so he's been gone for a long time but I do remember how he used to sing and dance to Teresa Brewer and make us all laugh. Good memories today

It’s amazing how songs were flops here and big hits in other countries. Glad it’s a good memory for you. It certainly is for me!

I think that about a lot of those dynamo young singers (like Brenda Lee and Tanya Tucker).

It wasn’t a “big hit,” I guess. Came out after Elvis, and you know what he did to pop singers.
