Where would we be without them?

Where indeed? The heroes of the emergency services are ever ready to step up and help us when we need help - police, fire fighters, paramedics (and others) - are just a phone call away and all of them will strive to do their best for us.
The only time I have needed emergency assistance was a good few years ago when I was knocked off my motorcycle by a driver who wasn't paying attention. Fortunately, I wasn't seriously injured but I did spend a night in hospital (as more of a precaution than anything else) and the attention I received was second-to-none.
I was discharged the following morning with instructions to take it easy for a couple of days, which I gladly did 'cos I was a bit sore from the bumps and bruises I suffered. I was so grateful for the service I received and for the fact that it wasn't more serious.
And do you know what - I didn't have to pay a single penny since, in the UK, where I live, our National Health Service is free when it is needed to anyone and everyone no matter how rich or poor they are.

You wouldn't have paid for the ambulance or hospital stay here, either. The person who hit you would have paid, or their insurance would have paid.
I'm glad you got good care after your accident. Many people in the UK say they don't get good care from the emergency services there. I guess that's because it is state-funded.

@DaddyEvil Nope - doesn't work like that in the UK. The driver who hit me would not have had to pay anything towards my hospital treatment - it's free for everyone (paid out of general taxation). I don't know where you're getting your information from but people I know who have had contact with the emergency services are, in general, very happy with the way they are treated (I certainly have been) and it's nothing to do with it being state funded. Sure, there are instances when things don't go smoothly or mistakes are made but at least no-one is thrown out of hospital because they can't pay their medical bills!

@Albain Maybe I should have highlighted the word "HERE" in the first statement so the second statement made sense to you.
No one is thrown out of a hospital HERE, either.

The people who get into those kinds of positions are very special and should always be respected.

That's really a good facility that you are enjoying. This doesn't happen in India. We have to bear our own medical expenses.

Yeah they are great. The last time I called was when my neighbor was yelling for help. I think he fell and hit his head.

Not too many motor-bike accidents end so well. An acquaintance has been in hospital for three months after a driver ran a red light and hit his bike. But you're right about the wonderful work the emergency services provide.

Sounds like a good healthcare system in your place. Here, we have public and private healthcare providers. The problem is people using public healthcare service has to wait for a long time. People who buy insurance or rich people opt for private healthcare service. Do you have private healthcare in your place? If only public healthcare is available, is the waiting time long?
