Childhood Illnesses

Reading this disturbing information made me remember my own childhood. I was lucky to have no serious illnesses, but I did get through all the regular ones. As I remember them, there were mumps, chicken pox, and some viruses. It was a great strain for my mom because she worked and had to leave me at home with a high fever and my grandma. Plus, what gave mom a big headache was that right as clockwork, these illnesses came upon me about two weeks before Christmas every year. Sure enough, after all the happy excitement about Christmas coming shortly before that, I got sick. To this day I do not know why it was this way, but I do know that by the time I got to second-grade thank heavens, mostly, I was healthy and all of this was behind me. I also remember something very amusing. My best friend, who was a year older than me, got ill with the mumps and for some reason, in the Latvian language, they are called cucinas. The second c has a soft intonation and translates to piglets. So when I heard my mom talking on the phone with her mom once again, I got my English all mixed up with my Latvian. So instead of asking mom what she was sick with, I asked, “Can I go and see her piglets?” Now it appears that children around the world are in danger of contracting scarlet fever. I never had it and apparently, now 19 children have died from Strep A-related illnesses. In places, like South Wales and Ireland. I say this is scary, especially for those people who have small children and grandchildren. I hope they can figure out what is causing this outbreak. Another photo of me and Santa when I was five.

It is scary for children and grandchildren to get ill from scarlet fever recently. I also hope that a cure of this illness will happen soon.

Apart from those once in a life time illness such as mumps what used to happen to me was that any cut or wound would fester.

I had scarlet fever when I was very young. The bacteria are spread by people coughing or sneezing, I am not ready to take off my mask when I go outside.

@popciclecold People are selfish, they know that they are sick, but they go shopping and do not even put on a mask to protect the others.

Scarlet fever can be easily transmitted by contact with that person's saliva. It is a childhood illness which is serious and can affect the kidney, heart and other parts of the body if not treated well. From what i have read, because of the antibiotics prescribed by doctors, the mortality rate of scarlet fever has been less than 1%

Cute picture. Some parents who don't believe in vaccinations are causing some of the outbreaks of diseases that we thought were under control. I hope they are able to stop the spread of some of these diseases.

I agree with you. When we were kids if we didn't have vaccinations, we could not go to school.

@popciclecold the scariest part is that they are not only getting sick but also dying. It should not happen in this day and age,

It seems most viruses flare up in the cold months when people are prone to staying indoors plus I get the feeling that viruses don't like sunshine, they act almost like little vampires

The only “childhood illness” I got was mumps. I’ve been vaccinated against measles and rubella. And I never had chicken pox so I won’t take the shingles vaccine…no sense in it.

I hope those kids that get sick will get better. Christmas is a bad time for children to be sick.

It's funny that you would get sick right before Christmas when you were young. I had normal childhood sickness as well. I don't remember when, seems likely in wintertime more so.
