I seem to have too much to discuss these two days..LOL But the topics have lined up like that...:( One of the party leaders said that he is not gonna give any compensation to people who have consumed illicit liquor and died. I agree. This is nonsensical way of forcing governments to pay monies without receiving taxes from the liquor manufacturers. The drunkard consumes, and dies, and his family is compensated. First and foremost, why? The family should be deserting him. But it hangs on. Obviously there is no loss of bread winner. Then where is the need to compensate? Is there any emotional attachment? Nope. The family would be happy...good riddance...to nuisance. As to illicit liquor manufacturers, they don't pay taxes...so the government machinery doesn't get anything from them. They cultivate wrong elements of the society to prevent honest officials from reporting on them. If this is to be curtailed, the best way is to let people know...nothing will be paid. They drink at their risk. Demand for illicit liquor will come down in the country. Or at least, we can hope for it. While I prefer Anna Hazare's way of handling drunkards..(tie them to trees), this method is acceptable to me too. What solutions have you for controlling drunkards? EVERYBODY WHO DRINKS IS NOT A DRUNKARD. I have a good friend here who drinks quite frequently. LOL

If the government made it legal and got taxes, then it shouldn't matter who drinks.

Then they would have to pay three times, which would put it out of their budget. Secondly, the manufacturer would have to maintain quality standard. The liquor deaths are essentially because of wrong materials used for manufacture.

@vandana7 If liquor isn't up to a safe standard it shouldn't be on sale and any manufacturer who sells such liquor should be put in jail! In the UK there are strict laws in place to protect consumers from cowboy manufacturers. Anyone who is stupid enough to buy liquor from an unsafe source deserves all they get!

Addiction I feel is fueled by a.. availability of the drink, and b. society not having found a way to cross the family boundaries lest they be told to mind their own business. You are addressing the second issue. But I would want them to be reformed and drink in moderation.
