Don’t expect praise or compliments from your children!

I’m sure most parents have lived through experiences like this – you spend hours preparing a delicious meal only to have your children give it one look and say ‘Yuk I’m not eating that!’
Sometimes though it’s even more personal.
Last week a friend, who has two young children, was going for an evening out with her partner for a special Christmas meal, a real black-tie affair. The children were coming to us for a sleepover so they would have a whole night free (and guilt-free!) She was going to drop the children off on the way out.
As she was getting ready, putting on a dress and some fancy shoes – a rare thing – the littlest girl looked at her and said ‘Mummy, you look…..’
The friend waited, thinking perhaps her daughter might say ‘You look lovely’ or even ‘You look like a princess! But instead what came was ‘Mummy, you look like an old lady!’
Luckily the evening did get better after that.

@Fleura Our boys were well into their teens and Vin and I went to a dance with friends then on to the casino. We arrived home tipsy and very late (make that early!) to find both boys pacing the house. We got a roasting for not telling them or leaving a note saying where we were going. Talk about chickens coming home to roost!

@wolfgirl569 Not always, I still remember going to a party when Big One was little, she could talk but didn't know too many words. When I was dressed she took my hand, led me to the mirror and said 'Nice!' Very touching. She was 21 months old, I know because I just looked up my account of it in the notes I kept!

I raised a son and a daughter. Now I have 5 grandchildren, ages 10 and under. I've certainly heard a few similar comments through the years! To quote my mom..."I wasn't sure whether I should laugh or cry!".

I think we should dress according to our age. That which suits us. Of course I wear the usual Indian saree whenever I go out. So there's no question of compliments. I look the same.
