JJ? If you’re still reading over here, one week ‘til it’s over. I miss our Grinch (who’s fine but he’s just taking a break from myLot and all his other social media places except Facebook). In fact, he’s complaining about the forecast cold. Heck, so am I! But I have a remedy: ten favorites with “cold”in the title. Here we go! #10 (In the) Cold Light of Day - Gene Pitney There’s more to Gene Pitney than “Town Without Pity” and “It Hurts to Be in Love.” Did you know he wrote Ricky Nelson’s hit “Hello Mary Lou”? While Pitney had the misfortune of rising to stardom right before the Beatles hit. That killed (or put a major damper on) a lot of budding careers. But Pitney was able to hold his own, thanks to his diversity. Not only did he have a slew of top 40 hits, he recorded two albums of country music with George Jones! (They were on the same label at the time [Musicor], so why not?) While this song wasn’t a big hit here in America it was a top 20 hit in Australia and a top 40 British success. At least they put him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while he was alive to enjoy it. He died on the road, in Wales, of a heart attack in 2006. He left a treasure trove of music that’s, sadly, mostly forgotten today. (In the) Cold Light of Day Written by Scott English and Laurence Weiss Recorded by Gene Pitney Released as a single, 1966 Clock on the wall please don’t tick at all:

Sometimes in the “hysteria” of the moment we lose track of everyone else. I mentioned Smokey and the Bandit in a movie discussion and said that it might not be all that well-remembered now, but in 1977 it was the biggest-grossing film in America NOT named Star Wars.

It’s sad that most of Pitney’s song play these days is “It Hurts to Be in Love” or “Town Without Pity.”

I am glad he made it into the Rock n Roll Hall Of fame before he passed. Well deserving. And I did know he wrote Hello Mary Lou
