You don't need a ticket! Indian Railway says

The Indian railways has announced that you don't need a ticket now to board a train. You can pay or reserve a seat or pay the penalty amount with your debit card. Now is it not a trick to put the passengers into a trap and extract money for them. Normally people who don't get a confirmed ticket used to board a train and used to catch hold of the TT or ticket collector/ checker and he would give them a seat after paying for the seat and some bribe too. I have suffered because of this. My reserved seat was given to someone else for a bribe by the TT. It happened to my son to and my son had give the TT a shout. These nuisance will be repeated by using the debit card this time. Rather earlier a passenger without a ticket had to get down in the next station without having to pay anything but now the passenger has to pay and may not get a seat and therefore travel his whole journey standing because the TT can only allot a vacant seat. The Indian railway is duping the customers.

I haven't had a travel out of my province for three years. But I know today it is OK for us not to have a real train ticket. You can pass with your ID card or the ticket barcode from your phone.

India has a high population so the trains are usually filled up and there are rarely empty seats. So boarding a train without a ticket can become a problem for the passenger.

@RubyHawk I came back home last year July from Kolkata by train. The AC two tier roof near the bathroom was leaking. I may have to travel to my elder son's place in Kolkata next year in the month of April.

Is this facility only for those who have a debit card? How about those people who doesn't have that as their numbers are pretty large in a country like ours?

I think they will allow credit cards as well but what's the use. If the TT can't provide you with a confirmed seat you will be losing the money.

Bribery is so hard to combat. Luckily it doesn't happen here, at least not on public transport.
