It’s Winter Solstice today and we always celebrate this day with Tang Yuan . It’s a kind of Chinese dessert that are made of glutinous rice and made into ball shape which symbolises reunion. My mother-in-law makes the glutinous rice balls every year for Winter Solstice, and invite other family members to eat the dessert together. It becomes the family tradition now. My daughter especially enjoyed making the Tang Yuan. We usually eat the glutinous rice balls with the sweet ginger soup. How do you celebrate Winter Solstice? Many people prefer to have different colors in glutinous rice balls, it makes them look prettier, I suppose, rather than all whites. I am actually not really fond of these glutinous rice balls, but it's quite nice to eat them with the ginger sweet soup. I prefer the type of glutinous rice balls my mom made when I was young - filled with coconut sugar cube. Perhaps I should make them next time.

We just added food coloring. Some people extract the coloring from sweet potatoes, beet roots or some leaves. I would like to try with sweet potatoes and pandan leaves next time.

Oh those look so good! Do you also have lychee? I love lychee. No we do not really celebrate it..but since it is the entering of winter here..the temp here tonight is well below zero farenheit.

Thank you for sharing this post it’s neat to read what others do their traditions. On the Dunkin Donuts app I could have gotten a free coffee today for winter solstice but my husband had to borrow my car to go to work so I wasn’t able to go.
