Do You Remember Wishbones?

I remember holidays in my youth when the wishbone was removed from the turkey, set aside to dry, and then two people made a wish and pulled the prongs. Whoever got most of it got their wish. I remember the kids would have fun deciding who would do the pulling. Was this done when you were young? Do you still do this? I haven't in years.

Yes, I did do that when I was young. I haven't done it in years. I think about it every time I cut the meat off the turkey.

@just4him I think my 2 brothers were also better at it than us 4 girls.

@marlina It was fun. We would hang the wishbone on the cupboard door handle to dry and then make our wishes as we pulled it apart. I think my brother knew how to get the biggest part.

At first I thought you were asking about the candy, but don't ask me where I heard about them. I don't think I even ever saw them, but there ya go. I have two or three turkey wishbones hanging around my kitchen. Don't ask me why... I guess it would be cheating if I pulled both ends.

You may have gotten in the habit because as a child you saw others doing it. Is this candy company in your area? Cute idea they had.

I have a few hanging around my kitchen but nobody to pull with me. Guess it'd be cheating if I pulled at both ends.

My hubby used to save the wishbone for our daughter, even when she no longer lived with us.

My son was just talking about this! We do have the youngest two pull the wishbone, at least when we have an intact one.

We sure did! A couple times it split right down the center . We still have this tradition, though it's my kids who do it now.

We still do this. When I read this discussion, I remembered I made a very similar one about the same thing, probably a year or two ago by now. I'm glad someone else remembers this little ritual of wishbones!

I totally remember this! We used to fight over the wishbone and who would get to pull it. Then 2 would pull it saying "Make a wish!" And the one with the biggest piece got their wish. I haven't done it in a long time because I either missed the big holiday dinner for work or nobody ever got the piece with the wishbone in it, lol. A lot of traditions have faded since I was a kid, and especially since we lost the matriarch of my family, my grandma. I lost her the very first year I was an adult. It has been 28 years since then but it still hurts the same as it did then, she has left a large hole in our hearts and in our family since she has gone. It was at the beginning of the holiday season too, on Halloween day. Kind of dampens the holidays when that happens.

So glad some others recall this seemingly lost tradition. Yes, when my gram passed a lot changed. I have some fond memories though.
