Happy Holidays to All

Whether you celebrate Sol Invictus, Saturnalia, the Yule, the Solstice, Kwanzaa, Channukah, secular Christmas with Santa, elves, and reindeer, or the Christian Christmas established by the Church in the 4th Century to give recent converts a celebration within the faith corresponding to the festivals they were brought up partaking in at this time of year, I wish you a very Happy Holiday.
With the exception of secular Christmas, which pays homage to conspicuous consumption, all these holidays celebrate the return of light to the world after a period of darkness.
The early church fathers concluded they could explain these older celebrations as expressions of a world waiting for a spiritual light to come to drive back the darkness that had taken root in human hearts over the ages. Thus, what better time of year could there be than the winter solstice to celebrate the coming of God into the world as the baby Jesus, Emmanuel, whose purpose in being born was to bring the light of Heaven to a world trapped in spiritual night?

I loved the second paragraph of your post. This season, whatever our beliefs, should NOT be about conspicuos consumption. I gave Vicente around US$10 to spend with friends, I bought a beautifl Elf for Sofía that was less than $5 and for Carolina I found a beautiful china bowl that was part of the inheritance I have from my parents. At my age, it is time togive away part of the thing that I have.
