Around here, “LBL” means “Land Between the Lakes,” the national recreational area located between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake in western Kentucky. Now it’s LDL: Last Day of Lockdown!! Hopefully I can escape the cold/snow prison tomorrow as the temperatures get above freezing. But we’re not done with cold songs, and here’s another one with “cold” in the title.
#4: Cold on the Shoulder - Gordon Lightfoot
I believe our favorite Pony (@TheHorse ) was waiting for this one. Hopefully other people knew this was going to show up as well.
His first greatest hits album was called Gord’s Gold, but if you ask me, nearly everything Gordon Lightfoot did turned to gold, whether it was a hit or not.
I wish to heck halls of fame in America — Rock, Country, and even the Nashville Songwriters (most of my early knowledge of Lightfoot’s music came from people like George Hamilton IV, Marty Robbins, and Bill Anderson covering his songs) — would get this guy inducted while he’s alive. The accolades aren’t going to do him any good in 20 years.
Meanwhile, enjoy one of Lightfoot’s great album cuts that got a lot of FM rock airplay back in the day.
Cold on the Shoulder
Written by Gordon Lightfoot
Recorded by Gordon Lightfoot
From Cold on the Shoulder, 1975

Pretty is complaining now... I asked her to check the mail because it's snowing again here.
I don't know this song, either.

Of course you don’t. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
And there won’t be any mail because the federal government celebrates Christmas today so they can get more holiday pay and all that gobbledygook.

@FourWalls Hmm... there was a package on the steps when Pretty went outside. Somebody is still bringing mail around.

How this Folk Minstrel is not in the HOF is a disgrace to the music industry and Gordon. So many great songs this one probably was overshadowed by another song off the same album, "Rainy Day People." Gord's music soothes the mind and is a tonic for the soul, especially when your snowed in during winter

There are quite a few people that have encrusted egg onto the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s collective faces by their omission. Gordon is definitely one. Are there any other songs you can think of off the top of your head that has made a memorial out of one shipwreck? And you know the Edmund Fitzgerald wasn’t the first nor the worst. But it’s THE one we remember every year….because of Gordon.

@dgobucks226 — oh, there were songs about the Titanic, the Bismarck, and the PT-109. But we only remember the anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

@FourWalls Good point! Since there are no popular songs about the Titanic, Gord's has to be #1

@RebeccasFarm — I just sat there, uncontrollably weeping for joy as he sang “If You Could Read My Mind.” That’s what a great song and a great songwriter will do for you. (Same thing happened when I saw Loretta Lynn and she sang “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”)

@FourWalls I'm glad to hear that you aren't sick. My husband's cousin's whole family has the flu.

I was surprised to see that it wasn’t a hit because it was on Gord’s Gold and got a lot of airplay in the 70s on FM rock.
