Hallacas are a traditional Venezuelan dish made with cornmeal dough stuffed with a filling of meat, vegetables, and spices, and then wrapped in a plantain or banana leaf and steamed. They are typically served around the holiday season, but can be found throughout the year in many restaurants and homes in Venezuela.
To make hallacas, the dough is first prepared by mixing cornmeal, water, and salt together to form a soft, pliable dough. The filling is made by cooking a mixture of meat, such as beef or chicken, with vegetables like onions, peppers, and tomatoes, and spices like cumin, coriander, and garlic. The dough is then rolled out and filled with the meat and vegetable mixture, and then wrapped in the plantain or banana leaf and tied with a string. The hallacas are then steamed until the dough is cooked and the filling is tender.
Hallacas are a beloved and iconic dish in Venezuela and are often served as a main course at special occasions and celebrations. They are rich, flavorful, and satisfying, and are a must-try for anyone visiting Venezuela or looking to try authentic Venezuelan cuisine.

I have never heard the name, but they sound similar to tamales.

Yes, it's something similar to tamales, but the stew is different. Very good I hope one day you can try them
