goodbye to the old year

Tonight we say farewell to 2022 and hello to 2023. We don't go out for New Year's Eve, but instead we stay home and have a dinner of fun finger foods and appetizers. We'll probably toast the new year with a glass of Martinelli's sparkling apple cider, although I can't remember if I have that or sparkling grape juice in the garage. Either way, we'll have something bubbly and fun!
I had the idea a few days ago to have a mini build-your-own hot dog bar with little smokies and small buns. I looked at the price of the Hawaiian sweet rolls (which would have been a perfect size) but decided to get regular hot dog buns that I would cut into thirds. I have all the usual hot dog condiments, plus I bought a can of hot dog chili and some shredded cheese for the ones who love chili dogs. I'll probably caramelize some onions in a little bit to use as a topping, plus make some bacon bits from a pack of bacon (which I just realized I need to grab from the freezer).
We've got a bag of ruffled chips and some French onion dip, plus a veggie tray and some beef taquitos (a favorite request for New Year's Eve dinner), and I even have some packages of pizza rolls that I got free from work. I have some holographic silver plates and cups from Dollar Tree and some silly New Year's Eve glasses from Target, so things will definitely be fun and festive.
I'm not quite sure how we're watching the ball drop at midnight (or hopefully somewhere on the East Coast at 9pm for us), but I've brought the Roku box from my room into the living room. I'm sure we'll find something streaming the ball drop for free.
Around midnight in our time zone, I'm expecting a TON of noise in the neighborhood due to fireworks. It seems like people set off fireworks for the littlest things, but for big holidays we'll hear the things for hours.
Tomorrow we'll eat Hoppin' John with collard greens and cornbread (and the ones who hate the beans will have ham fried rice) for luck and relax at home. I think everyone managed to have the day off!
Have a wonderful New Year, everyone! I hope you've all met your arbitrary goals on here and will be cashing out next month.

Ohhhh, love the idea of a mini hot dog bar . . . I just wish my kids would eat hot dogs!!! Maybe I'll have to do a sliders one. I actually stayed up to see the ball drop . . . but then fell asleep quickly . It was raining, but silly folks were still setting of the fireworks.

@spiderdust I didn't even bother to look out to see if we could actually see the fireworks . It wasn't bad as it'd normally be - at least it wasn't for hours on end. And yah, we don't need any more fires here . . . so good that it was wet (except for the poor folks who have to deal with land/mudslides).

They were doing that here too! I thought maybe the rain would discourage the fireworks people, but nope. At least everything being wet reduced the chances of things catching fire.

@much2say Yeah, we're due for an even worse storm tomorrow and the ground hasn't had time to soak up the last batch of rain. We are guaranteed more mudslides for sure.

Happy New Year!
If you lived just a little bit closer, I'd invite myself to your house! Pretty and I won't be doing anything to celebrate tonight. We never do. I hope everything goes well for you and yours.

@spiderdust I woke up not long ago and made a ham sandwich for my lunch and am ready to settle in and visit this evening/night.
I set out hamburger to thaw but Pretty hasn't said what she wants to eat for supper later tonight.
You're already gearing up for tonight...

@DaddyEvil It's probably because I'm hungry. I don't think I really had lunch.

We'd have plenty of food for you!
I just pulled out the little slow cooker and the smokies.

@spiderdust — the weatherman bought it all up before he told us about the storm.

You forgot to get bread in blizzard weather? What kind of a southerner are you?

@FourWalls Well, THAT figures.
We're getting ready to watch the New Year ring in for the East Coast and then I'm sending kids to bed. Happy New Year!

@spiderdust - Years ago we stayed up to wait for the new year, but no more now, we are both sleepy in the evening.

That's what we did too. Almost everyone was in bed shortly after 9pm, although a couple of the teenagers stayed up watching movies.

@spiderdust Yes, that is true. A good night for fireworks.

@TheHorse Despite the fact that they were going off for so long, I do think it was still fewer fireworks than we heard last NYE, and definitely fewer than how many went off on the 4th of July.

I heard fireworks from 8:30 last night until well past 1am. I was surprised at how many fireworks were going off while it was still raining.
At least nothing was likely to catch fire!

You always go the extra mile to show your family a good time! And your meals are wonderful, the children will enjoy doing this, fixing their own mini hotdogs Jay and I air fried burgers, which we haven't had in a long time! They were amazing, with nacho chips, olives, pickle slices, romaine lettuce and sliced tomato. Pumpkin pie for dessert

@spiderdust And with using the air frier, my stove top is clean! The racks in the air frier, I pulled them out, washed and dried them, they're clean for the next time around:)

@kobesbuddy Did you know they make parchment sheets to fit the air fryer? They're also helpful for keeping things clean!

The hot dog bar sounds like fun. I could think about that for the Superbowl, but am more into the sliders idea.

Your mini hot dogs sound good. Yes, I meant my goal on here.
I usually find three or four different stations that have the ball dropping. I like to watch the news that usually shows the celebration all over the world.
Happy New Year!

I brought the Roku into the living room, and my news app is live streaming the ball drop on the East Coast. It's almost time!

My son was bouncing around the house, singing, "Hopping John! Hopping John!" after I told him what I was making.

@Daniel3 I'm wondering why you've posted this exact same sentence to several people on here. Are you actually a bot?
