"Wir sind Papst!"( German headlines of many newspaper for "we are pope") was the jubilant idiomatic expression in Germany showing pride in having a German pope after 600 years, when Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected head of the two billion strong Roman Catholic Church.
Three days ago, Pope Emeritus Benedict passed away. Many believe he was one of the brightest popes in the history of the Catholic Church. As head once of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, he vigorously defended the deposits of faith from the onslaught of liberalism and relativism and from the attacks of conservatives and fundamntalists. Indeed, he was able to steer the church towards real orthodoxy. Ratzinger was 35 years old during the Second Vatican Council, and most of the documents that came out of the council has had his fingerprints on them.
Hats of to this famous world Leader, whose last spoken word was, " I love Jesus Christ!"

Ratzinger, during the Second Vatican Council, was known as a brilliant theologian, he attended all four sessions as peritus to Cardinal Joseph Frings, archbishop of Cologne. Following each session, Ratzinger wrote an account and analysis of the theological debates among the bishops, giving his verdict on what had been achieved. Just to be clear, only the Pope is the one who signs the documents of the Vatican Council. As an Italian I know enough about Rome, the Pope and the Vatican.
