Oscar-Nominated Songs: Georgy Girl

New day, and yet another song on the monthlong list of favorite songs that were nominated for “Best Original Song” in the Oscars history. And another one that might make you go, “Huh, that was in a movie?” Yeah, me too. Here it is. Georgy Girl - The Seekers That loud noise you heard from Australia was @JudyEv cheering an Australian group making the list! This was the third, and biggest, top 20 single for the Seekers in the U.S. The movie received a number of nominations, too, including for Lynn Redgrave’s performance as Georgy. (A side note: Redgrave’s mother, Rachel (Lady Redgrave) Kempson, was also in the film.) The song lost to (cringing) “Born Free.” (Eww, cringing again..sorry, I just can’t see that song’s name without hearing Andy Williams. ) The movie is a comedy-drama about a love…well, not triangle, more like “octagon.” I’ve never seen it, but the song is terrific and that’s the important thing in this countdown!! This song suffered a double blow in 2022. It was co-written by Tom Springfield, who was Dusty Springfield’s brother. He passed away last year, as did The Seekers’ great lead vocalist, Judith Durham.
