Foie Gras?

Foie gras is a food made from the liver of a duck or goose. French law defines it as the liver of a duck or goose that is fattened by gavage (force-feeding).
Gavage dates back to 2,500 B.C. when the Egyptians would force-feed birds to fatten them up.
Gavage-based foie gras production enlarges the liver up to **10x** it's usual size. Some countries have outlawed this practice.
I think the idea of force-feeding a duck or goose is abhorrent and inhumane; and I would NEVER eat foie gras.
Would you or have you eaten foie gras? What do you think about the practice of gavage (force-feeding)?

I don't care for the taste of liver; and I would never eat foie gras because of the way that it's produced.

@LindaOHio I do not like the taste and I hate to know that animals are abused. If you knew how they treat the hens who produce eggs, may be you would also stop eating eggs.

@LadyDuck I hate to think about ANY animal. They are kept in such terrible conditions.

There is so much that could be done to make the living conditions better for these animals.

Although I enjoy liver, I have never had (or even heard of) foie gras. And now that I know what they do to the poultry to create it, I wouldn't ever order it or eat it. It's already bad enough that our livestock live pitiful lives before being slaughtered, but I think we should at least try to help them have a somewhat decent life.

@LindaOHio Happier animals equal healthier animals, which equals better quality food.

You are 10,000% correct. There is a lot that can be done to make the animals have better lives.

It's cruel. Many animals that we eat are kept in inhumane conditions.

@LindaOHio It is an unfortunate reality. I try not to think about it. It's one of those things I can't do anything about—but I do feel for any animals who are mistreated before we slaughter them to eat them.

@MommyOfEli2013 For being a picky eater, I wouldn't think that you would like liver! I can't stand it.
