When I started this I said I could be sappy. Welcome to that! Love this song, love this movie. Here’s today’s song from the list of favorite Academy Award-nominated songs. It Might Be You - Stephen Bishop I remember seeing Flip Wilson, dressed as Geraldine, when Tootsie came out, singing, “Toot-toot Tootsie, goodbye, Dustin you gave it a try.” Hey, even Flip wasn’t the original cross-dresser. That’s right. I’ll fess up. I grew up watching transvestites. From Klinger on M*A*S*H to Jack Lemmon (“nobody’s perfect” ) and Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot to Flip Wilson to the greatest cross-dresser of all, Bugs Bunny, there’s something funny about a guy in a dress. Recently I’ve discovered Australian Barry Humphries and his alter-ego, Dame Edna Everage, and he’s a hoot. (And, honestly, a better-looking woman than Eleanor Roosevelt was! ) So, from that perspective, Tootsie really WAS nothing new. But dang it was funny. A little trivia: Bill Murray refused to have his name listed in the credits because he thought the movie should stand on its own and not be considered a “Bill Murray movie.” He played Jeff, Michael’s roommate and the only one (other than director/producer Sidney Pollack’s character, George) who knows the secret of daytime TV sensation “Dorothy Michaels.” Dustin Hoffman said he really didn’t consider Tootsie a “comedy” because, to him, it showed the problems that women, even in a “women’s lib” society, face. I consider it a great movie. Stephen Bishop, who’s done a little acting himself (he’s the folk singer who gets his guitar smashed by John Belushi in Animal House and had one of the absolute BEST lines in Kentucky Fried Movie in his five seconds or so on screen there), sang this song to an Oscar nomination. It didn’t win (more on that later), but it was one of Bishop’s biggest hits, along with “On and On” and “Save It for a Rainy Day.” Tootsie was nominated for nine other Oscars in addition to the Best Song, but only Jessica Lange won the supporting actress award. Think I’ll pull the DVD out and watch this again. It really is a great film. It Might Be You Written by David Gruisin, Alan Bergman, and Marilyn Bergman Recorded by Stephen Bishop From Tootsie, 1982 Watching trains go by:

Cross dressing used to be a great way for a comic to get a laugh. Try it today and see what happens to your career. Ah, but I digress... Great film and great song which fit perfectly into the scene in the movie

The first time I ever saw John Lithgow was as Roberta Muldoon in The World According to Garp. He was amazing in that role, and played it perfectly straight instead of “for laughs.”

@FourWalls And back then viewers just shrugged their shoulders and said oh well. Playing that role took guts and talent. And that movie was also released in 1982. A decade later Robin Williams did his female dressing thing in Mrs. Doubtfire, another terrific performance.

Yeah, that's sappy. Maybe that's why I don't remember it. And I don't remember Bill Murray being in it. I do remember the movie, though, and that Teri Garr played Dustin's girlfriend and wasn't Dabney Coleman in it, too?

Yes, Dabney did what Dabney does best….playing a jerk. Bill had one of the best lines….”that is one nutty hospital.”

I like this song very much. It has been available for many movies and TV series. Then one day I finally found out it is original from the movie Tootsie.

You’re incorrugated, er, incorrigible. Now, the way things work around here, you’ll probably know tomorrow’s song.

Amid all the action movies it was such a refreshing change of pace. I watched it every time it was on cable in 1983.
