Mongooses or mongeese?

MyLotter, Always smiling (@allknowing) wrote about growing sweet potatoes and mentioned that mongooses would dig up her plants. She now has fenced off the plants to keep the pests out. You can catch up here: In my comment, I wasn’t sure of the plural of ‘mongoose’. Is it mongooses or mongeese? So off I went to search and apparently it’s mongooses. But what amused me was that the heading on the site gave mongoose three ‘o’s in the middle which looked very strange - mongoooses. The word is in big print. You’d think it would have jumped out at someone so it could be corrected. More proof that you shouldn’t always trust the worldwide web, at least not when it comes to spelling. But mongoooses or even mongoooooses still isn't!

You'd reckon they'd get something like that correct, wouldn't you? It doesn't give the site much credibility..

I don't know much about them. I know they are deadly enemies of snakes.

I did not know so I checked online and then I double checked my printed dictionary. The correct plural of mongoose is not mongeese but mongooses.

It seems it can be either after all. I didn't go far enough down that particular rabbit-hole.

Gee, that is really interesting looking. We really don't have a smiliar animal,..closest thing would be a weasel or an ermine and they they are slim and not as chunky.

I'd go with mongooses, after all they are totally unconnected to geese.

That's true. But if we have goose and geese, why don't we have moose and meese? But maybe let's not go there.

Interesting that they are mongooses, not mongeese. When we had a garden we had to put up a fence to try and keep the critters out from eating it. But the groundhog(s) would always find a way to get in.

I have noticed a lot of errors like this on the web lately. I wonder if it has to do with the speed to get it out on the web nowadays.
