From Burlap to Silk

Just thought I would share this photo with you of a 1920s door on one of my favorite houses here in Florida. Anyway, I just spent 2+ hours getting a keratin treatment on my hair. I walked into the salon looking like a bush woman and walked out with smooth, silky hair. My hair tends to bush out and frizz on rainy days and in high humidity. Since my hairdresser up north refuses to do it, I’m going to have it done again just before I head back to Connecticut in April and hope it lasts as long as possible. Have you ever had it, a permanent, a color, hair straightening, or highlights?

I have never had a permanent or coloring of my hair other than getting a haircut where I look like Curly Howard of the Three Stooges.

Smart! I always wanted long straight hair and had it straightened once. I looked like a jerk. I'm just tweaking what the Lord gave me.

@DianneN Natural was brunette with a hint of red. Now all grey. I usually use henna and the red varies by how long I leave it in. My hair has no body at all. So perms help but don't last long

@wolfgirl569 You must have very fine hair. I also have a lot of red in my hair. My aunt was a natural redhead.

I also love that door. Glad you got your hair fixed up. Back in NYC when my mom was alive we had a spring ritual to have our hair permed and fixed up, I decided not to just let my hair go naturally and not color it anymore. My grandmother had very lovely white hair and I figured that is how mine would go, As a result not I have white bangs and the rest of my hair is the color it would have naturally been in my childhood. Hopefully this means I am going back in years and not forward

@DianneN just the white strands in my bangs and the rest as I mentioned is my mousy brown hair I had all through my childhood until I started coloring it all kinds of shades from university onward. I guess that means I am not old at all it's just my imagination. I still want to rock and roll,

That's a nice ritual you had with your mother. Your hair must look amazing with white bangs. Do you have any other white in your hair? And lol! Going backwards sounds like fun!

I wonder what wood that door is made of? It looks highly polished. I've never heard of a keratin treatment but I also don't go to hair dressers.

That’s odd why does the one up north refuse to do it? Do they not know how to do it properly maybe and don’t want to damage your hair?

@DianneN well if you’re not happy with it that seems so weird he won’t do it for you but nothing you can do to change his mind. Just one more reason to have two different homes

I've had a permanent once but that's it. In my 20s and early 30s I used to color my hair always thinking I would get a darker color but it never lasted long and I finally wized up, I haven't used Nice & Easy since I was 32.

The one and only time I had a perm I wound up looking like a clown! I tried Nice & Easy when I was 19, but my mother took one look at my brassy hair and almost fainted. Since then, with her advice, I've been getting it done professionally. World of difference

Yeah, it's usually better to get a pro to do it but best of all is to simply be happy with what God gave you.

I permed my hair once, bad idea, my hair grows too fast, after one month it looked miserable. I do highlights and I straighten with a brush and the blower. Winter is very dry here, that is great, so my hair does not bush out and frizz.

@DianneN So true, dry hair is not good for the skin. I have a cream that a dermatologist gave me and I have eye drops for my poor dry eyes. I had the perm for the wedding of my brother, I remember his face when he saw me "What did you do sister? Are you crazy?"

@LadyDuck I am certain I will need a new moisturizing face cream. I've tried so many, and only a couple worked. Here, the ones I have are old. I should replace them soon. I will wait to see what the woman recommends.

Dry air is good for the hair, but bad for the face. I have an appointment for a facial in a couple of weeks. My skin is very dry. I had a specialist look at it. I had one perm in my life and looked like a clown. More like a lunatic

I had a perm when I was in high school. It fried my hair and I swore if my hair grew back healthy that I’d never do anything else to it. I was blessed and it grew back fine and I happily cut the fried hair off.

I used to have permanents all the time when I had longer hair. When it started to go silver, I colored it, and then I found I liked its present look, so it's au natural now.

@just4him You look so adorable in your baby picture. I'd never know it was a perm if you hadn't told me. Our hair changes over the years and so do the styles. Only we know what feels and looks best on us.

@DianneN I am happy with it. I always hated when my mom permed my hair. She kept it short. My very first perm was when I was 16 months old. I was so happy to grow my hair long when I left home. Of course, I needed to perm my hair. It's wire. The only way I could get it to style was to perm it. When I got older and went back to short hair, it looked better without the perm, and there you have it. As for my first perm - here's a picture. It's my baby picture.

Old doors are more durable. I used to have highlights curls and had my hair straightened once in a while when I was younger in my late twenties and early thirties.. I am 61 now and I just wear my hair as is . I have natural wavy black hair. I apply hot oil treatment once a week. I don't shampoo everyday.

I agree and so much prettier. My hairdresser told me not to wash my hair every day, too. Your hair must be so beautiful with all you are doing for it. I should start doing the hot oil treatments. I used to, but haven't even thought of it for years

I agree. I don't know anyone personally who has had a permanent since the 80s I believe those marks are the natural grain of the wood used.

Cool door with the little peep door (is that what it's called?). I don't have super straight Asian hair . . . mine has a slight wave so it can get frizzy in certain weather too. I had a perm in my teens . . . not colored by did henna on my own back then too. Otherwise, these days, I just let it all go naturally .

@DianneN My hair is just long now - nothing special about it really. I know, the frizz gives volume . . . in that sense my hair never looks "flat", but it can look too poofed too. I think I got a perm because I saw other Asian gals look cool with it - plus with the henna look. You can never look like a clown!!

I think it’s meant to be peeped through Your hair must be so beautiful. I don’t like frizz. It seems to double the volume of my hair. My one and only perm left me looking like a clown. I have no idea what possessed me to do that.

It does make your hair softer and silky. Any idea when you can return? My neighbor up north is a Filipino. She’s married and has two adorable kids. Her father lives with them and works in a factory to make yogurt for a supermarket chain. He went back to the Philippines in October to give his wife and everyone he knows money. He returned a couple of weeks ago and is back working. The woman made me a Filipino dish and it was delicious. Today I looked up more to make myself

Love the door. I tried to have my hair straightened twice in the 60s when straight hair was the vogue. It didn't take. I've had my hair colored in a salon a couple of times. Now I just like it au natural...silvery gray.

That door is pretty special and so old. I'm sure you look just fine with your silvery gray hair. Is it wavy or curly? I had my hair straightened once and looked like a dufus. Flat straight hair doesn't go well on my head or with my face.
