10 years ago or so one of the final biology veteran teachers retired and a young man (like 23) was hired to replace her and to bring us all together since she had been so divisive and mean. Initially he did that but he was young, arrogant, overconfident, and ambitious. He soon earned the disdain of the other seasoned teachers (science and beyond) and moved on to a group of other teachers. That lasted for a year or two and then he sucked in some new young female teachers in our wing. (I always called it his "harem")
He is very enthusiastic about his subject. I don't deny that. He also volunteered his time for school committees, he was a class advisor and founded a Jane Goodall-based club, and was a chaperone for so many events. Still he knew how to play the game. He got in "good" with administration and was voted Teacher of the Year recently despite the fact that half of the building staff by that point absolutely despised him.
Anyway he is moving on after Friday. He is going to a different school system. It is a bit of a demotion in that he is back to teaching first-year bio classes compared to what he is teaching now but he also has an opportunity to move up into administration there when it isn't ever going to happen where he currently is. . . because he has pissed off building administration.
My closest work friend and I are very interested to see how our end of the wing's dynamic changes once he is gone. He seems to be the glue holding the harem together. I see 2 of the teachers remaining close since they are both young, newly married, and one is pregnant while the other is trying. I don't think that the other 2 young teachers will stay connected to them. My friend and I don't have strong feelings about it either way since we aren't in the group and never wanted to be.
He leaves behind a mixed legacy. He absolutely has been passionate about biology. He also has offended a majority of the staff there along the way. It will be interesting to see how the next year in the wing and department unfolds.
