Little Slice of Life

Since many places don't currently seem to want book donations, I've decided to become the book fairy. I've been packing up the books from the garage that I could now let go of and delivering them to various Little Libraries. A Little Library is community run small library where people can leave or take a book for free . . . often it is a birdhouse-like shelving unit on a pole in front of the owner's house. I went to a Little Library in a neighborhood I hadn't visited before. As I placed the books to give away, the owner of the home came home in his van. He introduced himself and we had a lovely chat about his Little Library. He also asked me if I wanted some arugula and swiss chard . I got a tour of his front yard vegetable garden. What a nice man - I wished he was my neighbor! I promised I would bring more books for his Little Library . That was this morning's slice of life. How was your morning?

I slept this morning, like usual but got up at noon to take Pretty to a doctor appointment in Springfield, about 45 miles away. She's complaining about pain in her left foot so our regular doctor got her in to see a podiatrist. They x-rayed her food several times and the doctor said he'd call and tell her what he found. I'm going back to sleep for a while and will be back on myLot after while. I'm tired.

I hope Pretty's foot is ok . . . did she injure it? I know those long drives can be draining - it's always harder for me going home. Hope you got some good sleep and they let Pretty know what's up with her foot soon!

@DaddyEvil Oh, an orthodic? I hope that helps. I knew a lot of people who used them in their figure skates - back then I think they may have been custom ones. Glad you got some good sleep!

@much2say The doctor called late this afternoon and told Pretty to buy a shoe insert that would raise only the left side of her left foot and see if that fixed things. We couldn't find any inserts like that at Walmart so she said she would check on Amazon for one. Thank you. I slept well for two hours.

A bit busy, but I did laze around in bed a little longer today. So I got a late start. Tomorrow I know I can't do that if I want to get the laundry going.

It's nice to be in bed a little longer - especially on colder mornings. I like to get the laundry going early too.

@much2say I used to do mine overnight when my husband was in bed. Due to his work schedule it was really the only time I could get it done on some days, too. But, now that's he's retired I don't have to worry as much.

@kaylachan Oh gosh, then you had to stay up late (I used to have to do that). It is so much easier to do it in the early morning - then I could get to other things - plus I wouldn't be tired out of my mind.

I donated a few books soon after we arrived in Florida, but never received arugula or swiss chard. That’s a very nice trade. We have a few of those little book libraries here in Florida. Some are nicer than others, but the books weren’t appealing. I sometimes leave a book on my morning walk. Haven’t taken any lately. We get most from our clubhouse library.

@DianneN Today I found another one . . . it was one of the bigger ones I've seen, but very messy (I cleaned it up so I could put my books in there ). But the cool thing is, next to it was another shelf . . . for little artwork (same idea . . . leave art, take art) !

In most cases, nothing happens with these book donations. I was happy to get a vegetable trade . . . I will for sure bring his Little Library more books on another day. Right - some of them are nicer than others. Most times I don't grab a book for myself (besides the fact I have too many at home as it is). I just want to get rid of what we have in the garage so we can finally have space . . . meanwhile my books are taking up space in these Little Libraries now .

@much2say I'm sure your books will be put to good use as will having more space in your garage. This morning, I dropped off a book, but nothing there interested me. I think they still have the same books that interest no one

@VivaLaDani13 I think I distributed over 20 grocery bags of books last week! And I just compiled more books to let go of. Books certainly deserve to have a long life!! I hope they can find the root of what's going on with all the pains. I can't function much with headaches, I don't want to be anywhere near a screen at that point. Hope you are feeling better from that time . . . I think you get the results from your scans soon? Keeping my fingers crossed!

@much2say You're sweet. Not judging, but there are many people out there who dump books and let them get ruined. So I appreciate you did something wonderful with the books you no longer wanted. They will be used and cherished for longer. I am alright thank you so much. I just get pains a lot now in my neck and around my back and often headaches. I have been unable to be on here for a little bit especially last night. I had a headache for 7 hours. Then it left and a neck pain started. It's been very irritating. How are you doing?

What a great outing that would have been. We picked up two books last night from the foyer of our friend's apartment block. People leave books there for the taking so it's a bit different to a Little Library. We do those here too. It's a great idea.

I love the idea of giving a book another chance to be read . . . pass it on to be shared again and again. A foyer would have so much more room . . . some of these Little Libraries are cramped for space (can't fit in those big books).

Oh wow that was so nice he offered you those foods! My daughter works at a thrift store and they throw out so many books so I take them and put them in little free libraries. I have too many books myself from little free libraries and not enough time to read so I only look in them for books for my baby anymore. I’m a little obsessed with the little free libraries. I’ve visited over 100 different ones.

@much2say no only a few are within 10 miles of me but when my kids and I go shopping or I go geocaching etc I spot them or I look up new towns I’m going to and see where little free libraries there are located. Do you have the new Little free library app? I love it but it only shows registered ones and most I’ve spotted aren’t listed online on their app.

Usually these book drop offs are uneventful . . . so it was nice to chat with someone and yah, I got me some veggies ! Oh my gosh I would be all over those thrown out books. Some good perks with your daughter working at a thrift shop! I'm still discovering where these Little Libraries are. That's great you've gone to so many - are they all local to you? We don't have one in our neighborhood . . . some I'm visiting various neighborhoods I've never gone through.

@Marilynda1225 I have not jumped into the bandwagon of using Kindle yet. Oh but I'm sure it helps with space - no need for bookshelves! Speaking of goodies, during the pandemic I saw a couple of these Little Libraries turn into a Little Pantry so people could trade food!

@much2say I think those little libraries are wonderful. We have one by our local community center and I've dropped off books there occasionally. Lately I've been reading more and more on my Kindle so my pile of "real" books is dwindling. Hope next time you drop books off by the gardener he'll fill you up with more goodies from his garden.

@MarieCoyle My mother in law's senior living place has very small library - I should ask (but oh, a majority of these books were originally from their house ). There are many local senior places out here - it would ultra convenient if they would take them in . I have a love for books . . . it's nice to share and give them a chance for new life instead of just tossing them !
