Not quite a before photo; more a 'middle' photo

In the photo, you can see the progress we made today on an area where we’ll lay bricks on Sunday. It took a lot longer than we bargained on but we’re home now and getting cleaned up ready to go across to the oval to buy our dinner from the food trucks. I think there will be some music there too which would be nice. It was quite hot spreading and compacting the sand but it’s done now and the rest should be quite easy. I think it will look nice when it’s finished.

@JudyEv Not just that You believe in the dignity of labour but not so here in India They would rather live in those conditions until a mason turns up. Same with joblessness They will only take up jobs that they are qualified to do Anything smaller they are not interested. I bow to you

Many people here do a lot of their own maintenance and tackle small jobs. Builders/bricklayers are so busy at the moment that they wouldn't be bothered with this fiddly job.

@allknowing Thank you very much. You are embarrassing me a little now. But it's true - I do, and we do, believe in the dignity of labour. We could have afforded to pay for many things that we've done ourselves but I guess in a way it goes against our principles as well as saving us money and giving us the pleasure of accomplishing something.

@JudyEv I'm glad they aren't fussy but I'm also sure you guys do high quality work, too.

@DaddyEvil The huge driveway we did for the BIL is still there after many years and a lot of traffic - cars, caravans etc as well as foot traffic.

They've been watching as we've been doing it and are very happy with it. They aren't fussy about what pattern we use in the centre but they've been consulted every step of the way.

Do the bricks get laid down on top of this?

Yes, you need a very flat firm surface before you lay the bricks.

That looks like really hard work. I can't bend my knees otherwise I'd love to try to do something like that along the fence line where Roscoe had been digging under.

Our knees and backs will pay for it later. But we'll get over it after a few days.

You are doing a job of patience, it takes a while to have the surface ready, good luck.

We are not getting paid at all which is what we want but, if we were, we wouldn't want to charge by the hour. It would the 'client' a fortune!

@JudyEv You made me laugh Judy. My husband is very precise, every time he does something it takes forever. I tell him all the time that no one would pay him by the hour.

@LadyDuck This is quite fiddly work too. A professional wouldn't want to be bothered with it when there are many more more straightforward jobs around.

Good effort and a lot of hard work. I hope that the food that you get from the Food Trucks is good and hygienic. Yesterday I had a bit of stomach ache. It was probably due to extra, binge and heavy eating during the last few days. So I kind of skipped a few meals yesterday and hopefully it would be better now. Somehow I have been avoiding outside food due to hygiene concerns except from a few vendors.

@JudyEv Quality checks are claimed here as well but larger population, Number if Restaurants and Food Joints offering Food and well the perennial corruption sometimes plays the spoilsport.

I am sure that could be an issue. I think perhaps there are more restrictions here. It would only take one case of food poisoning for someone's food licence to be suspended. I wouldn't expect to get sick from food from these places.

I have always found that getting the base sand in and getting it level was always the hardest part of brick-laying. Yes, it will be much easier to lay the bricks. And much more fun to see the finished project nearing completion.

It got pretty hot in the middle of the day. Hopefully tomorrow will be coolish. We're starting at 8am which isn't all that early but the BIL doesn't live all that close.
