Blancmange - a memory

It was in those day when we had our first fridge. There is nothing that I did not experiment that which needed a fridge - jelly, mousse, china grass, you name it and my favourite blancmange. Blancmange took hardly any time. The pantry always had corn flour and the other ingredients - sugar, essence mostly cinnamon, food colours. We had many molds too. Each time I added different food colouring. and even had it in layers. When did you get your first fridge and did you play with it too? Image credit:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blancmange

I was still a grader then. I remembered making ice candy made of orange juice. I also made one using mung beans and milk.

I have always seen a refrigerator in the apartment of my parents, so I believe they bought it when they got married in 1950. Blancmange is very easy to make, I only use cream, sugar and gelatin, the taste is better than using corn flour.

@allknowing I use 15% fat cream to make blankmange. In France they use 35% fat dairy cream, but it's a bit too fat for me.

I don't recall playing with our fridge. When I was young, the fridge ran on kerosene and there always seemed to be a problem with the wick.

Sad that you only remember having problems with your fridge.

@allknowing Later we were connected to mains power and then we got a 'proper' fridge. This was all before I got married.

When I was about 9, our family bought the first fridge. I've made jelly and red bean popsicles.

At first glance it looks like pudding or jelly here. The taste is sweet and chewy, It's delicious very much I like it.

@allknowing Well you are right, jelly is transparent. For pudding, it's not because it's usually mixed with milk, eggs, and other.

I’ve just always had a fridge never known a life without one. How did you store things before having one?

I have always had a fridge. Blancmange looks like a really interesting dessert. I never really heard of it, but I am a milk fan, and I think I would really like it.

I did not experiment much when I got my first fridge but did start experimenting with different dishes when after my kids were born. Would try out new recipes every weekend when I had holiday from work.

I had my first fridge at 1997. It was a heavenly feeling to have a ice maker and get an opportunity to drink ice cold water at home. It was a BPL frost free refrigerator.
