TV Theme Songs: Welcome Back

Happy Friday! I’m up and pestering you early because I have a hot lunch date with my sister-in-law. Before I leave you’re going to be hit with another song on my list of favorite theme songs from television series. I’ve used a number of songs where I didn’t particularly care for the show, and today’s entry is one of them.
Welcome Back - John Sebastian
The show was going to originally be called just “Kotter,” but even a great songwriter like John Sebastian couldn’t find things to rhyme with “Kotter.” He wrote this song, then as just “Welcome Back,” prompting the series to be named Welcome Back, Kotter.
It was a “welcome back” of sorts for John Sebastian. The Lovin’ Spoonful frontman (later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with that band) had a long lull in music after the Lovin’ Spoonful broke up, causing the man who wrote songs like “Nashville Cats” (as well as the song “Stories We Could Tell,” which was covered by the likes of Jimmy Buffett and the Everly Brothers) to make more money from selling real estate than his music.
Then along came this song, and this show…and, well, it was pretty much Sebastian’s last hurrah. He’s been popular in the folk circles since then, but this was his last big hit.
And, as many of you know, the series was the launching pad for the career of John Travolta. He was a “teen idol” in those days, even recording a hit called “Let Her In.” If you can’t tell by his vocals in Grease, singing wasn’t his strong suit.
I never watched Welcome Back, Kotter. It didn’t appeal to me for some reason. Maybe because I didn’t think Travolta was that “hunky”? But the song was released as a single and went to #1 in 1976, and I liked it quite a bit.
A great memory from the eclectic era of 70s music.
Welcome Back

We tease him a lot:

Always reminded me about where I grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn New York and the fun time I had in high school. Still love to watch Vinny through YouTube and boy, wish Travolta had aged better,

A lot of those 70s teen idols didn’t age well. Seen Leif Garrett lately?

@RasmaSandra — I know. I thought Danny Bonaduce was so cute when he was on The Partridge Family.

@FourWalls very scary to look at and remember Danny Bonaduce of The Partridge Family? Much better off as a boy but then he grew up,

I think the song is okay, not on my top 10 list of TV theme songs, but it is a catchy tune and I will sing along if I hear it on the radio. Like you, I never got into the show at all. I tried watching it many times, and I just didn't find it funny or appealing.

That’s why it’s not in the top ten.

You didn't care for the show? What? Where? Vinnie's usual response to Kotter.
Nice Sebastian trivia! Did he try out for the Monkees TV show too? I always liked his tune "Rainbows all over your Blues." One talented folkie!

The producers wanted the Lovin’ Spoonful to be the band, with several stipulations including that they’d have to change their name to the Monkees. Sebastian said the band turned the offer down, which turned out to be good for TWO bands, the Spoonful and the Monkees.

I was a fan of this show and I'm not ashamed to admit it The whole cast was pretty funny or at least they were back then.

I think I was way too preoccupied with Elton John in 1975 to notice this show.

Your homework assignment:
1. Get out your A1A album.
2. Look who wrote “Stories We Could Tell.”

I watched it as a kid, and I can remember the theme song very well. I liked all of the characters, especially Horshack, the nerdy kid.

Is he the one who laughed through his nose?

@FourWalls his laugh was more of a throat scrape-y noise, but it definitely was one of his characteristics. He was the one who would raise his hand and yell "OO! OO! OO!"
